State contractors in China have demonstrated their expertise in infrastructure construction with the successful completion of a major railway tunneling project. The China Railway 24th Bureau Group Corp Ltd (CR24) and other infrastructure builders, including units from China Communications Construction Co Ltd and China Railway Group Ltd, completed the construction of the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-speed Railway tunnel on Thursday. This is the first tunnel over one kilometer long to be dug on the railway, with a maximum burial depth of 86 meters, and it passes through many fault areas in the mountainous region of Hubei province.

The 1.4 km tunnel is designed to accommodate high-speed trains that will run at speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour, making travel faster and more convenient for passengers in cities between Shanghai and Chengdu, Sichuan province. The project used a combination of tunnel-boring machines and traditional drilling methods to excavate the tunnel and was completed 40 days ahead of schedule.

The completion of the tunneling project is a significant milestone for the 2,100-km new railway line, which will connect six provinces with the nation’s rail network, providing a much-needed transportation link for the Yangtze River Delta region. The project is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region, create new job opportunities, and stimulate domestic demand.

China’s expertise in infrastructure construction has played a crucial role in the country’s economy over the past few years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The country’s investments in infrastructure have been instrumental in connecting cities and regions, improving transportation and logistics, and boosting economic development. Effective infrastructure investment in key projects, such as upgrading the railway network nationwide, will continue to play an increasingly vital role in boosting the nation’s economy and livelihoods.
