Zhipu AI Expands Globally with Alibaba Cloud Partnership Amid IPO Plans

China’s Zhipu AI is intensifying its international presence through a strategic partnership with Alibaba Cloud, as the artificial intelligence startup sets the stage for a potential initial public offering. The company is actively engaging with foreign governments to promote the development of sovereign AI agents tailored to local needs, according to vice-president Carol Lin. Speaking at the GITEX Asia tech conference, Lin revealed that Zhipu AI is broadening its operations across global markets with offices in regions such as the Middle East, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Malaysia. Additionally, it has launched joint innovation centers in countries including Indonesia and Vietnam, solidifying its regional influence in Asia.

Founded in 2019 as a spin-off from Tsinghua University, Zhipu AI has quickly emerged as one of China’s most promising players in the competitive AI landscape. It is vying for leadership alongside other rising startups such as Moonshot AI, Minimax, Baichuan, and 01.AI, while also competing with established tech giants like ByteDance and Alibaba. Zhipu’s push for global relevance coincides with the company taking formal steps toward becoming one of China’s first emerging AI firms to go public. Recent regulatory filings suggest that the company is in the early stages of an IPO process, a move that could position it as a trailblazer in the sector.

Zhipu has received significant financial backing in recent months, including three rounds of state-supported funding in March. Among these was a notable 300 million yuan (approximately $41.5 million) investment from the Chengdu municipal government, underscoring public sector confidence in the company’s vision and technological capabilities.

Despite its momentum, Zhipu faces geopolitical hurdles. In January, the U.S. Commerce Department added the firm to its export control entity list, restricting its ability to acquire components from American suppliers. Nevertheless, the company remains undeterred in its efforts to expand and innovate. A promotional video shared during the GITEX conference illustrated Zhipu’s AI assistant enabling a foreign user to navigate Beijing using familiar apps like WhatsApp, Google Maps, and Reddit, showcasing the firm’s focus on building multilingual, globally compatible AI solutions.

With international partnerships, government collaborations, and a potential IPO on the horizon, Zhipu AI is steadily positioning itself as a key global player in the evolving AI ecosystem.
