Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng reported deliveries of 35,045 units in April, maintaining its streak of exceeding 30,000 monthly deliveries for the sixth month in a row. This performance marked an impressive 273% year-on-year increase. Earlier in April, the company launched its revamped flagship model, the X9, with a starting price of 359,800 yuan (approximately $49,482).
Rival automaker Leapmotor exceeded the 40,000-unit milestone, delivering 41,039 vehicles in April. Although slightly below its December 2024 record of 42,517, this figure reflects the company’s continued strength in the competitive EV sector.
Nio delivered 19,269 vehicles under its main brand, a notable increase from 10,219 in March. However, performance across its sub-brands varied. Onvo saw a slight drop, delivering 4,400 vehicles in April compared to 4,820 in March. Meanwhile, Firefly, another Nio sub-brand, officially launched its compact electric vehicle on April 19, priced from 119,800 yuan. Deliveries began on April 29, with 231 vehicles delivered by the end of the month.
BYD maintained its dominance in the market with April passenger vehicle sales totaling 372,615, marking a 45.09% increase year on year. The automaker also hit a new milestone with 79,086 vehicles sold overseas, surpassing its previous record of 72,723 set in March. As part of its aggressive push, BYD unveiled five new models at the Shanghai Auto Show, held from April 23 to May 2.
Not all companies experienced growth in deliveries. Zeekr, owned by Geely, reported 13,727 units delivered in April, down from 15,422 the previous month and a 14.7% decline compared to the same period last year. Similarly, Li Auto delivered 33,939 vehicles in April, a drop from 36,674 in March, though it still marked a 31.6% increase year on year.
Xiaomi delivered over 28,000 vehicles in April, slightly below its record of more than 29,000 from the prior month. The company faced heightened scrutiny following the fatal crash of an SU7 vehicle on April 2 that resulted in three deaths. The incident put safety concerns in the spotlight at the Shanghai Auto Show, where industry observers noted a trend toward incorporating more Lidar systems. Lidar technology, which helps create detailed maps of surroundings, is increasingly being integrated into vehicles to enhance driver-assistance features and bolster safety.
