ChinaCultural Fusion: An Indonesian Gen Z Stylist's Journey of Exploring Ethnic Cultures in China

Pei Youshu, a Chinese Indonesian Gen Z stylist who is currently studying in China, is deeply inspired by the country’s rich cultural heritage. According to her, China is a treasure-house of vibrant ethnic cultures, which have played a significant role in shaping her artistic vision. Pei believes that incorporating elements from both Chinese and Indonesian cultures in her designs will help her create unique and captivating pieces that will capture people’s attention. This reflects her eagerness to learn from and celebrate different cultures.

Pei’s interest in Chinese culture extends beyond just fashion. She is particularly fond of traditional ethnic dances and costumes, which have a special place in Chinese culture. She has always wanted to come to China to learn more about the country’s rich cultural traditions firsthand. This curiosity led her to enroll in Guangxi Arts University’s College of Film, Television, and Media as a junior in fashion styling. She sees this as an opportunity to immerse herself in Chinese culture and gain new insights that will inform her future work.

As a student of fashion styling, Pei’s studies at Guangxi Arts University have given her the chance to explore the intersections between Chinese and Indonesian cultures. She believes that incorporating elements from both cultures in her designs will allow her to create fashion that is unique, innovative, and draws attention from all over the world. Pei’s approach highlights the importance of embracing cultural diversity and using it as a source of creativity.

Pei Youshu’s passion for cultural exchange and her desire to celebrate the beauty of different cultures is an inspiring reminder of the value of embracing diversity. Her journey as a Gen Z stylist studying in China is a testament to the power of cross-cultural learning and the potential it holds for shaping a more interconnected world. By drawing inspiration from her own heritage and the cultures she encounters, Pei is creating fashion that celebrates the richness and diversity of our world.

Pei’s academic journey began in 2020 when he was admitted to a university in China. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he had to complete two years of his degree online while living in Indonesia. In November, he finally arrived in Nanning, ready to embark on a new journey of in-person learning.

Prior to coming to China for his studies, Pei had already explored various cities across the country. From bustling metropolises like Beijing and Hong Kong to cultural hubs such as Nanjing and Harbin, he had a broad perspective of China’s diversity and history.

Being in Guangxi, where 12 indigenous ethnic groups reside, has excited Pei to learn more about their unique and brilliant cultures. He looks forward to visiting museums and cities across the region to gain inspiration and material for his designs. Pei hopes to incorporate the traditional elements of these ethnic groups into his design concepts.

To accurately express his design ideas, Pei has been taking painting courses in his spare time. Additionally, he watches videos on the traditional costumes and history of China’s 56 ethnic groups whenever he can. By learning about the characteristics of each group’s traditional clothing, he can develop more accurate and exquisite designs.

Pei expressed his excitement for the traditional costumes of the Zhuang ethnic group, saying that he could make them more beautiful without altering their original designs. Pei’s passion for design and eagerness to learn about China’s diverse cultures make him an asset to the academic community and the design industry.

Pei, a student at Guangxi Arts University, expressed his gratitude towards his teacher, Huang Yanbing, for providing him with professional guidance and adequate room to fulfill his potential. According to Pei, Huang has played a crucial role in helping him realize his dream. Pei feels confident about his future, thanks to Huang’s support.

For Pei, Huang is not just a teacher but also someone who cares about his life like a mother. Pei considers Huang a treasure he has found in China, along with the splendid ethnic cultures. Huang’s concern for his students goes beyond just academic performance, making her an invaluable mentor to students like Pei.

Guangxi, due to its geographical proximity and close ancestral ties with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states, has become one of the most popular provincial-level administrative regions in China for international students. In 2019, the number of students from ASEAN countries who came to study in Guangxi exceeded 10,000 for the first time. The region’s cultural diversity and the presence of prestigious universities like Guangxi Arts University make it an attractive destination for international students.

The influx of international students to Guangxi is a testament to the region’s commitment to fostering cultural exchange and promoting academic excellence. The universities in Guangxi, including Guangxi Arts University, offer a wide range of courses that cater to the diverse interests of international students. The region’s welcoming atmosphere and emphasis on cultural diversity create an environment where students from different backgrounds can thrive.

In conclusion, Pei’s positive experience with his teacher at Guangxi Arts University reflects the quality of education and support provided to international students in the region. The increasing number of international students coming to study in Guangxi is a testament to the region’s growing reputation as a hub for cultural exchange and academic excellence.
