For Swathi Nair, a teacher from Munnar, India, intuitive eating marked a significant shift in her relationship with food. After struggling with the pressures and guilt associated with a restricted calorie diet, Nair discovered intuitive eating through the guidance of a nutritionist. This approach transformed her life, enabling her to forge a healthier body image and improve her overall quality of life.

Intuitive eating is about breaking free from the cycle of emotional or reactive eating, explains Dr. Rashmi Gupta, a naturopathic doctor from Vedic Sutra wellness center in Noida. It involves a conscious and thoughtful engagement with one’s eating habits and attitudes, prompting individuals to question whether they are experiencing physical or emotional hunger.

The benefits of intuitive eating are extensive. Studies published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders and the journal Eating and Weight Disorders highlight its positive impact on psychological well-being, body image, self-esteem, and blood sugar regulation. Moreover, intuitive eating aligns with the age-old wisdom of our ancestors, who naturally followed their bodies’ cues to determine what and when to eat.

Reshma Kardekar, a dietitian and nutritionist at SAS Diet Learning Academy in Mumbai, emphasizes that intuitive eating is not just about eating when hungry. It’s about recognizing when hunger becomes uncontrollable and making mindful food choices. She warns against the modern trend of consuming processed foods and eating out frequently, which has led to a surge in metabolic illnesses.

Incorporating intuitive eating into daily life involves distinguishing between physical and emotional hunger, says Dr. Gupta. This distinction is vital for listening to the body’s needs and making informed food choices. The trend has gained significant popularity on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, highlighting its growing influence in our culture.

Historically, the concept of intuitive eating has been present since the 1970s. Figures like Thelma Wayler, Susie Orbach, and Geneen Roth have contributed to the development of this philosophy, focusing on sustainable lifestyle changes and emotional aspects of eating. Ayurvedic practitioners also advocate for intuitive eating, emphasizing the importance of listening to one’s body and eating seasonally.

As part of mindful eating, Ayurveda recommends “ritucharya,” adjusting one’s diet and lifestyle to align with the seasons. This approach considers the body’s energy dynamics or “doshas,” and how they influence overall health. By being mindful of portion sizes, opting for local and seasonal foods, and staying hydrated, individuals can practice intuitive eating effectively.

Intuitive eating is more than a diet; it’s a journey towards a more harmonious and satisfying relationship with food, where each meal is an opportunity to connect with one’s body and its intrinsic wisdom.
