UncategorizedMassive Donation Boosts the Collections of National Archives of Publications and Culture

The Beijing headquarters of the National Archives of Publications and Culture recently received a remarkable donation that promises to make a lasting impact on the preservation of Chinese history and culture. As reported by the Xinhua News Agency, this generous contribution encompasses over 120,000 physical items and an impressive 42TB of digital publications. These have been amassed from a myriad of public and private collectors spanning the country.

The assortment of physical items is vast and varied. It comprises ancient texts, some of which are exquisitely printed and have seldom been viewed by the public. The collection also boasts real-sized photocopies, premium publications, precious works representing China’s intangible cultural heritage, and an array of other items including photographs, calligraphy scrolls, inscription rubbings, manuscripts, and stamps. Significantly, a remarkable 80 percent of these ancient books and documents are in pristine condition and constitute a rare find, having stayed hidden from the public eye for long.

Esteemed professor Zhang Yiwu, from Peking University, discussed the profound implications of this addition. He expressed his admiration for the invaluable nature of these artifacts for China’s historical and cultural legacy. According to Zhang, this substantial acquisition not only affirms the success of the institution’s diligent efforts since its inception a year ago but also reinforces the significance of such rare collections in perpetuating Chinese cultural heritage.

Opened in July 2022, the National Archives of Publications and Culture has been touted as China’s “seed bank” of culture. With its main establishment in Beijing and additional branches in three pivotal Chinese cities, the institute stands as a sentinel for the preservation and inheritance of the vast tapestry of Chinese civilization. The Beijing headquarters alone, nestled at the base of the scenic Yanshan Mountain, is home to a staggering 16 million copies of historical texts, spanning across 10 major categories.

Liu Chengyong, curator of the national archives, emphasized the institute’s dedication to cultural diplomacy. By focusing on the acquisition and research of Chinese historical documents housed overseas and championing international seminars, the archives aims to bolster cultural exchanges on a global scale. This is further enhanced by partnerships with renowned international libraries, museums, and art galleries, facilitated through events such as international book fairs and the “Chinese Culture Year”.

Liu extended an invitation to overseas sinologists and experts, urging them to experience the institution firsthand. He hopes that such interactions will pave the way for enriching discussions on publication-related matters.

The Beijing headquarters serves as a testament to China’s rich historical trajectory and the evolution of its civilization. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in diverse exhibits, ranging from ancient stamps and currency to the iconic Terracotta Warriors.

Supporting the main establishment in its mission are the institute’s branches located in Hangzhou, Xi’an, and Guangzhou, continuing the commitment to safeguard and celebrate China’s illustrious past.
