Tencent Holdings, the renowned Chinese technology conglomerate, is pioneering a new venture in the healthcare sector by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into various medical applications. Alexander Ng, the president of Tencent Healthcare, revealed the company’s ambitious plan to leverage its in-house large language model (LLM), Hunyuan, in an interview at a recent event in Shanghai. This initiative reflects Tencent’s strategic move to harness its technological prowess in social media and AI for healthcare innovation.

Tencent’s healthcare strategy involves integrating Hunyuan with popular social media platforms such as WeCom, WeChat’s enterprise version. This integration aims to develop specialized AI applications for clients in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, including prominent names like AstraZeneca. Ng, who joined Tencent after a tenure at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, emphasized the unique approach Tencent is taking to improve academic understanding and communication within the medical community.

The company’s Next Generation Engagement Suite is a testament to this approach, offering an interactive platform powered by data tools. This suite is not just an amalgamation of Tencent’s universal communication channels like WeCom and Tencent Meeting but also provides specific channels tailored for the medical industry. Tencent Healthcare has previously launched consumer and business-facing products, including an AI medical imaging solution, Miying, and a medical insurance payment service via WeChat, showcasing its diverse capabilities in health tech.

Tencent’s foray into the healthcare sector is part of a larger trend among tech giants in China, such as Alibaba Group Holding, Baidu, and Huawei Technologies, who are also exploring AI’s potential in digital transformation across various industries. The Chinese online healthcare market, projected to reach US$311.5 billion by 2026, presents a lucrative opportunity for these companies, propelled by the nation’s aging population and increased internet access.

Since unveiling Hunyuan in September, Tencent has integrated the model into over 180 services spanning its extensive product range. This integration covers sectors like retail, education, finance, and medicine, indicating Tencent’s comprehensive approach to AI application. However, the healthcare industry’s adoption of AI is cautiously paced due to the high stakes involved in patient well-being.

Regulatory measures by Chinese authorities have imposed restrictions on AI usage in healthcare, particularly in areas like automated medical prescriptions. Despite these regulations, Ng believes AI has substantial potential to assist, rather than replace, doctors, especially given China’s growing aging population and the ensuing scarcity of medical resources. He advocates for a paradigm shift in medical services, suggesting that internet platforms can offer self-service models providing disease prevention information, chronic illness management, and medical education through live-streaming sessions.

Tencent’s commitment to healthcare reflects a balance between seeking growth and acknowledging the sector’s immense social responsibilities. With its technological expertise and strategic focus, Tencent is poised to play a significant role in the digital transformation of the healthcare industry, shaping the future of medical services and patient care.
