BusinessJen Salke Steps Down as Head of Amazon MGM Studios

Jen Salke, the head of Amazon MGM Studios, is stepping down from her role, as confirmed by the company. In a memo sent to employees, Mike Hopkins, Amazon’s head of Prime Video and MGM Studios, announced that Salke is leaving Amazon to pursue film production opportunities. Hopkins stated that Salke’s position will not be replaced, and Amazon has opted to flatten the leadership structure to streamline reporting lines and accelerate decision-making. Going forward, the studio will operate as distinct film and television divisions.

Salke, who joined Amazon in 2018 after the departure of Roy Price due to allegations of inappropriate behavior, reflected on her decision in a statement. She expressed that she had been contemplating her next move for some time, and after considering the achievements made during her tenure, including the teams and leadership established, as well as the successful projects in the pipeline, she felt confident that it was the right moment to leave. Salke also signed a first-look film and TV producing deal with Amazon as part of her departure.

Under Salke’s leadership, Amazon Studios expanded its influence in the entertainment industry, marking a significant shift from its early days of niche, prestige content. During her tenure, Amazon produced critically acclaimed projects such as “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Reacher,” and “Fallout.” One of the most ambitious projects under her watch was “The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power,” which became the most expensive TV series ever made. Salke’s leadership also helped Amazon gain recognition as a key player in original content production, transforming the company’s standing in Hollywood.

In 2021, Amazon’s acquisition of MGM Studios for $8.45 billion brought with it valuable intellectual property, including the iconic James Bond franchise. Earlier this year, Amazon gained full creative control over the Bond franchise from the Broccoli family, further solidifying its position in the entertainment industry. Salke’s departure marks the end of an era at Amazon Studios as the company continues to shape its future direction in the competitive world of streaming and film production.
