BusinessBMW, Toyota, Mercedes Recall Nearly 70,000 Cars in China Over Safety Risks

Nearly 70,000 vehicles are being recalled in China by major global car manufacturers including BMW, Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz due to safety-related issues, according to the latest announcement from the country’s market regulator. The recall comes amid growing regulatory scrutiny in the automotive sector following a recent fatal crash involving a Xiaomi electric vehicle.

Starting June 25, BMW’s China division will recall a total of 26,766 domestically produced vehicles and 80 imported ones. The decision follows the discovery of a defect in the power connector, which has the potential to become a fire hazard if not addressed. The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) detailed the recall in a statement posted to its website, emphasizing the importance of rectifying the power component fault to avoid possible accidents.

FAW Toyota, the joint venture between the Japanese automaker and its Chinese partner, will recall 10,892 vehicles, including 93 imported units. The issue cited involves suspension bolts that may not be adequately secured, potentially compromising vehicle stability during operation. This recall began on Friday, as noted in a separate SAMR notice. The safety of vehicle handling and structural integrity is a priority concern given the risks associated with high-speed driving and rough road conditions.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is recalling 31,874 vehicles in China, including four imported models. According to the regulator, the recall addresses two critical problems: fire hazards and issues in the installation of the air-conditioning system’s condensate drain line. Improper installation could lead to water leakage or other complications affecting electronic systems and interior components.

Genesis, a luxury British automotive brand, also announced the recall of 181 imported vehicles due to dashboard-related issues that could impact driver visibility and safety. These combined recalls mark a significant increase in regulatory activity, as last month saw just 7,200 vehicles recalled across 11 different car brands.

The Chinese authorities have recently intensified their focus on automotive safety, a trend that was highlighted during the country’s largest car show in Shanghai. The recent surge in recall actions reflects a broader government initiative aimed at strengthening consumer protection and ensuring that both foreign and domestic car manufacturers comply with increasingly rigorous safety standards. The moves are seen as part of an effort to maintain public confidence in the automotive industry, particularly in the fast-growing electric and smart vehicle segments.
