Michael Jordan Joins NBC’s NBA Coverage as Special Contributor

NBC is set to bring NBA coverage back to its network this fall, and it’s doing so with a major addition—basketball legend Michael Jordan. The network announced during its Upfront presentation that Jordan will join as a special contributor to its NBA broadcasts, marking his first partnership with a major broadcaster since retiring from professional basketball in 2003.

In a video message accompanying the announcement, Jordan expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming season. “I am so excited to see the NBA back on NBC,” he said. “The NBA on NBC was a meaningful part of my career, and I’m excited about being a special contributor to the project. I’m looking forward to seeing you all when the NBA on NBC launches this October.”

Details about Jordan’s specific role remain limited. He is not expected to appear on a regular basis, but rather to make select contributions throughout the season. His presence brings both credibility and nostalgia, as he was one of the most iconic figures during NBC’s original NBA broadcast era in the 1990s.

NBC signed an 11-year agreement with the NBA to begin broadcasting games across its NBC Sports platforms and Peacock streaming service starting this October. The return of NBA games to the network is being designed to recapture the classic feel of the 1990s era, a time closely associated with Jordan’s legendary career.

As part of that effort, NBC is reviving “Roundball Rock,” the John Tesh-composed anthem that became synonymous with NBA broadcasts during that decade. The network also plans to reintroduce player introductions during broadcasts, aiming to recreate the dramatic and energetic presentation that fans remember fondly.

Joining Jordan in NBC’s basketball lineup are Jamal Crawford, Reggie Miller, Carmelo Anthony, Mike Tirico, and Noah Eagle. In a unique move, the broadcasts will also feature an AI-generated version of the late Jim Fagan’s voice to enhance the nostalgic experience for viewers.

Since leaving the court, Jordan has built a notable business portfolio, including ownership of the Charlotte Hornets and a stake in 23XI Racing, a NASCAR team. His return to NBA media, even in a limited capacity, is expected to draw significant attention and add prestige to NBC’s renewed involvement with the league.
