Alphabet’s autonomous vehicle division, Waymo, has received official approval to expand its self-driving ride-hailing service to cover more areas within the San Francisco Bay Area, including a significant extension into San Jose. This expansion follows Waymo’s submission in March of a passenger safety plan to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), a critical requirement for operating driverless vehicles over a wider geographical region. The CPUC granted approval on Monday, allowing Waymo’s fully autonomous service to extend from San Francisco southward through the Peninsula and into the South Bay, reaching nearly all of San Jose.
Waymo expressed enthusiasm about the approval through a post on social media platform X, stating that while immediate operational changes are not expected, the company looks forward to bringing the benefits of its Waymo One service to more residents of the Bay Area in the near future. The expansion marks a key milestone in Waymo’s ongoing effort to broaden its commercial robotaxi footprint in one of the most tech-forward regions in the world.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan publicly welcomed Waymo’s arrival, highlighting the company as a symbol of the region’s innovative spirit. He described the approval as a timely advancement, noting that Waymo’s presence is a fitting addition to the city known as the Capital of Silicon Valley.
The announcement coincides with ongoing regulatory discussions in California regarding the testing and deployment of self-driving vehicles. The California Department of Motor Vehicles is currently reviewing potential new rules that would govern how autonomous vehicles are tested and introduced on public roads, reflecting the state’s evolving approach to integrating emerging transportation technologies.
In recent developments, Alphabet reported that Waymo is now providing more than 250,000 paid robotaxi rides weekly across the United States, demonstrating significant consumer adoption and operational scale. Additionally, Waymo and Toyota have formed a preliminary partnership aimed at exploring how robotaxi technology might be integrated into personally owned vehicles, potentially expanding the reach of autonomous driving capabilities beyond fleet-operated services.
