Alphabet’s autonomous vehicle unit, Waymo, is preparing to launch test rides for its robotaxis at San Jose Mineta International Airport in California this fall. The initiative marks Waymo’s first foray into airport-based autonomous transportation in the state, with plans to offer paid rides later this year. The company has obtained regulatory clearance to operate driverless vehicles at the airport, enabling passengers to experience fully automated rides between terminals and other locations within Waymo’s San Francisco Bay service area.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan highlighted the timing of the rollout, noting that the airport will be at the center of major sporting events in 2026. He emphasized that Waymo’s service will provide safe, efficient, and convenient transportation for visitors attending these events, reinforcing the city’s commitment to embracing advanced mobility solutions. Passengers will be able to be picked up at the Ground Transportation Centers located in Terminal A or B, facilitating easy access to Waymo’s autonomous network.
Waymo’s airport expansion builds on its earlier success at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which launched in 2023. The Phoenix airport has become the most popular destination within Waymo’s metropolitan service area, attracting significant user engagement and demonstrating the demand for autonomous airport transportation. Waymo’s spokesperson noted that the Phoenix launch provided valuable operational insights and a strong foundation for scaling similar services at additional airports.
Beyond airport operations, Waymo has steadily expanded its autonomous ride-hailing footprint across major U.S. cities. The company currently operates commercial services in Austin, Texas; Atlanta; San Francisco; Phoenix; and Los Angeles. These deployments showcase Waymo’s commitment to advancing self-driving technology while offering practical transportation solutions in urban and suburban environments.
Earlier this year, Waymo extended its coverage in the San Francisco Bay Area, adding 27 square miles to its service area. This expansion included Mountain View, Palo Alto, and San Jose, integrating key residential, commercial, and technological hubs into its autonomous network. The increased coverage allows Waymo to serve more riders, streamline mobility across densely populated areas, and continue testing its driverless technology under diverse traffic and environmental conditions.
Waymo’s continued growth reflects Alphabet’s broader strategy to commercialize autonomous vehicles and expand their utility beyond traditional urban routes. By integrating airport operations into its existing network, Waymo aims to offer a seamless, end-to-end autonomous travel experience, catering to both everyday commuters and travelers navigating major transportation hubs. The San Jose airport initiative represents a significant step toward making driverless mobility a mainstream transportation option across the United States.
