Microsoft and Tech Giants Commit $40B+ to AI Investments in the U.K.

BusinessMicrosoft and Tech Giants Commit $40B+ to AI Investments in the U.K.

Microsoft announced plans to invest $30 billion in the United Kingdom by 2028, focusing on expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure. The investment includes $15.5 billion in capital expansion and $15.1 billion in its U.K. operations, enabling the construction of the country’s largest supercomputer. The facility will feature over 23,000 advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) and is being developed in partnership with British cloud computing firm Nscale.

The move is part of a broader wave of AI investment in the U.K., with other tech giants including Nvidia, Google, OpenAI, and Salesforce pledging multibillion-dollar commitments. Combined, these initiatives total more than $40 billion in new investment, underscoring the U.K.’s growing role in the global AI landscape.

Microsoft President Brad Smith highlighted the company’s evolving stance toward the U.K., noting that regulatory hurdles had previously slowed major investments. “Just a few years ago, this kind of investment would have been inconceivable because of the regulatory climate then and because there just wasn’t the need or demand for this kind of large AI investment,” Smith said.

Nvidia announced a £11 billion ($15 billion) investment with partners Nscale and U.S. infrastructure provider CoreWeave, deploying 120,000 Blackwell GPU chips—the company’s largest deployment in Europe. Nvidia said the initiative will position the U.K. as an AI developer rather than solely a consumer.

Google is investing £5 billion ($6.8 billion) to expand AI development in the U.K., including a new data center in Waltham Cross. The project is expected to support Google’s AI-powered services such as Google Cloud, Workspace, and Maps, and create 8,250 annual jobs for U.K. businesses.

OpenAI’s “Stargate U.K.” initiative, backed by Microsoft, will deploy up to 8,000 GPUs initially, with the option to expand to roughly 31,000 over time. The first development under the project is planned at Cobalt Park in Newcastle, aiming to accelerate AI adoption across the country.

Salesforce plans to increase its U.K. investment to $6 billion, up from $4 billion in 2023. CEO Marc Benioff described the move as a reinforcement of the company’s long-term commitment to the U.K. CoreWeave will also contribute £1.5 billion to expand AI data center capacity, bringing its total U.K. investment to £2.5 billion.

These announcements coincide with heightened diplomatic and business engagement between the U.S. and U.K., including state-level discussions on AI, quantum computing, and nuclear technologies, signaling a strategic push to establish the U.K. as a global hub for advanced technology and innovation.
