Toyota Electrifies Iconic Hilux Pickup for European Market

BusinessAutomotiveToyota Electrifies Iconic Hilux Pickup for European Market

Toyota has officially unveiled the all-electric version of its legendary Hilux pickup truck at the Brussels Motor Show. This marks a significant step for the best-selling global pickup, which has sold over 27 million units in its 50-year history. The new generation Hilux will be available in both battery-electric (BEV) and 48V hybrid variants, signaling Toyota’s commitment to diversifying its powertrain options for this robust vehicle.

The new Hilux BEV is powered by a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery, providing a WLTP range of up to 257 km (160 miles) on a combined cycle, and an impressive 380 km (236 miles) in city driving. Equipped with an all-wheel-drive system, it delivers a substantial 473 Nm of torque. This allows for a payload capacity of 715 kg (1,576 lbs) and the ability to tow up to 1.6 tonnes (3,527 lbs). The electric power steering is a new addition, designed to minimize feedback on rough terrain, enhancing the off-road driving experience.

Toyota has developed a new Multi-Terrain Select System specifically for the electric Hilux, optimizing settings for brake, torque, and power to ensure superior control in various conditions. Mirroring its predecessors, the electric Hilux maintains a ground clearance of 212 mm (8.3 inches) and can ford through 700 mm (27.5 inches) of water, underscoring its renowned off-road prowess.

The interior of the new Hilux adopts Toyota’s latest design language, featuring dual 12.3-inch screens for the driver display and infotainment system, similar to the new Land Cruiser. Both the BEV and the 48V hybrid models will be exclusively offered in a double-cab configuration and will come equipped with Toyota’s T-Mate active safety systems. The 48V hybrid variant pairs a 2.8-litre diesel engine with a lithium-ion battery, offering a one-tonne payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity, and is expected to be the volume seller in Europe.

The Toyota Hilux BEV is slated for a European launch in April 2026, with the 48V hybrid variant following in July. It is important to note that the Hilux is not currently sold in the US market, and there are no immediate plans for its introduction there.
