UPS to cut 30,000 jobs and close 24 sites as Amazon volume “glide-down” continues

BusinessUPS to cut 30,000 jobs and close 24 sites as Amazon volume “glide-down” continues

United Parcel Service said it will eliminate up to 30,000 jobs and shut 24 facilities in 2026 as it continues reducing low-margin delivery volume for Amazon and reshaping its network toward higher-profit shipments.

UPS Chief Executive Carol Tomé said the company is entering the final stretch of its plan to reduce Amazon packages, telling analysts: “We’re in the final six months of our Amazon accelerated glide down plan and for the full year 2026, we intend to glide down another million pieces per day while continuing to reconfigure our network.”

The company stressed that the 2026 job reductions are expected to happen mainly through attrition and buyouts rather than layoffs. Chief Financial Officer Brian Dykes said layoffs are not planned.

Despite the restructuring, UPS reported a strong holiday-quarter performance. Fourth-quarter consolidated revenue came in at $24.5 billion, ahead of expectations, and adjusted earnings were $2.38 per share, also topping forecasts. UPS said revenue per piece rose in both its U.S. domestic and international segments, reflecting the company’s shift toward higher-margin shipments.

UPS forecast 2026 revenue of $89.7 billion and said it expects results to be weighted toward the second half of the year, after the Amazon volume reductions are completed.
