Aerospace and defense giant Leonardo has finalized its acquisition of GEM Elettronica, a specialized Italian company focused on advanced maritime technologies. This strategic move significantly enhances Leonardo’s capabilities in radar technology and naval systems, reinforcing its position in the global defense market.

Leonardo has completed the acquisition of the entire share capital of GEM Elettronica, a move that elevates its stake from a previous 65% to a full 100%. This consolidation is a significant step for Leonardo, aimed at strengthening its technological portfolio in the critical naval sector. GEM Elettronica is renowned for its development and production of advanced maritime technologies, including navigation systems, situational awareness tools, radar sensors, and optronic and inertial sensors.

The acquisition is expected to deepen Leonardo’s expertise in radar technology and systems tailored for naval and coastal applications. GEM Elettronica, with its specialized focus and a history of supplying Leonardo on various projects, including collaborations on the FREMM program and Italian Navy fleet modernization, brings valuable experience and innovation to the larger group. The company reported revenues surpassing EUR45 million for the 2025 fiscal year, underscoring its market presence and technical proficiency.

This strategic acquisition aligns with Leonardo’s broader “Industrial Plan,” which emphasizes organic growth through digitalization, improved efficiency, and inorganic growth via international alliances. By fully integrating GEM Elettronica, Leonardo aims to play a more proactive role in the evolution of the European defense industry. This move also supports the European Union’s defense industrial strategy, which seeks to enhance intra-EU defense trade and strengthen supply chain resilience. Leonardo’s increased control over GEM Elettronica, a company with 40 years of experience in the naval sector, is poised to contribute to this objective by enhancing its integrated supply chain and technological offerings.
