BusinessChina's Factory Activity Surges to One-Year High in March Amidst Global Disruptions

China’s manufacturing sector has returned to growth, with its Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) reaching 50.4 in March. This marks the fastest expansion in a year, snapping a two-month contraction and exceeding economists’ expectations. The rebound was driven by increased production and new orders, signaling a pickup in economic vitality.

The official gauge for manufacturing activity climbed to 50.4 in March, a significant improvement from 49.3 in January and 49.0 in February. This expansion was fueled by a surge in both production and new orders, with sub-indexes showing positive growth. Industries such as agricultural and sideline food processing, and nonferrous metals smelting and rolling, performed particularly well. The PMI for high-tech manufacturing also continued its expansion for the 14th consecutive month.

Alongside the manufacturing rebound, China’s non-manufacturing sector, which includes services, also entered expansionary territory. The non-manufacturing PMI rose to 50.1 in March from 49.5 in February, indicating a recovery in market activity and services.

Despite the positive manufacturing data, rising shipping fees and costs for imported commodities, exacerbated by the ongoing Middle East conflict, are weighing on surveyed companies. Price indexes for raw material inputs and factory-gate prices saw sharp increases. However, many businesses anticipate these disruptions to be temporary, especially with planned high-level diplomatic engagements. Inquiries for Chinese-made solar panels and batteries have seen an uptick, particularly from European and Indian buyers. Analysts emphasize the need to sustain this momentum through continued policy support and project implementation to ensure sustained growth in orders, production, employment, and consumer demand.
