China has lodged a strong protest with Japan following an alleged incident where a member of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces reportedly broke into the Chinese embassy in Tokyo. The incident has escalated tensions between the two East Asian nations, with Beijing demanding a thorough investigation and preventive measures.

On Tuesday morning, an individual claiming to be an officer of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) allegedly forced their way into the Chinese embassy in Tokyo. Reports indicate the suspect scaled the embassy wall. A knife was reportedly found at the scene, though no embassy staff were injured.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep shock and lodged a strong protest with Japan. Spokesperson Lin Jian stated that Japan “failed to properly manage and discipline its Self-Defense Forces personnel and has not fulfilled its responsibility to ensure the security of Chinese embassies and consulates and their staff.” Beijing demanded an immediate and thorough investigation, punishment for the individual involved, an explanation, and the implementation of preventive measures.

Japan acknowledged the incident, with Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara calling the arrest of a Self-Defense Forces member “extremely regrettable.” Japan conveyed its regrets to China and assured that Japanese ministries would respond appropriately, including reinforcing security at the embassy. Police are conducting an investigation into the matter.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Kodai Murata, reportedly told police he wished to speak with the ambassador about China’s hardline stance on Japan and threatened suicide if his request was denied. The GSDF confirmed Murata’s affiliation and stated they are cooperating with the police investigation.

This incident occurs amidst already strained relations between China and Japan. Tensions have been high following remarks made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding potential Japanese military intervention in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan. China, which considers Taiwan a breakaway province, reacted furiously to these comments, leading to diplomatic and trade reprisals.
