ChinaChina's Top Diplomat in Pyongyang: Wang Yi Strengthens Ties with North Korea Amid Shifting Geopolitics

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Pyongyang on Thursday for a two-day visit aimed at bolstering bilateral relations. This marks Wang’s first trip to the North Korean capital since 2019, signaling a renewed focus on strengthening ties between the two neighboring nations. The visit occurs amidst a complex regional landscape and follows recent efforts by Beijing to deepen engagement with Pyongyang.

Wang Yi’s visit, at the invitation of the North Korean Foreign Ministry, underscores Beijing’s commitment to enhancing its relationship with Pyongyang. Chinese President Xi Jinping has previously expressed readiness to “open a new chapter in China-DPRK friendship.” This diplomatic engagement follows a series of high-level exchanges between the two countries in recent months, indicating a strategic effort to strengthen communication and coordination on regional and international issues.

The strengthening of ties is also evident in the resumption of crucial transport links. Air China has restarted direct passenger flights between Beijing and Pyongyang after a six-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, passenger train services between the two capitals have resumed. While these links are reopening, access for general tourists remains limited, with availability primarily for business travelers and exchange students.

This high-level visit takes place against a backdrop of evolving geopolitical dynamics. Beijing is keen to draw Pyongyang back into its orbit, particularly as North Korea has strengthened ties with Moscow, reportedly by supplying troops and weapons for Russia’s war in Ukraine. The visit also precedes a potential summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump next month, fueling speculation about renewed diplomatic efforts concerning North Korea. While Trump has expressed interest in direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, no concrete meeting has materialized. North Korea has indicated a willingness to engage in dialogue if its status as a nuclear power is recognized.
