Comedy Born from Loss: How His Grandfather’s Legacy Inspired a New York Comedian

CultureComedy Born from Loss: How His Grandfather's Legacy Inspired a New York Comedian

Raised in New York’s Chinatown by parents who immigrated from Hong Kong, this comedian’s journey is a testament to resilience and the pursuit of one’s passion. Growing up amidst the vibrant culture and challenges of Chinatown, he found solace in friendship and the humor of late-night television. Inspired by the laughter of millions, he discovered the power of comedy and embarked on a path that would change his life.

Initially studying engineering, his comedic talent soon emerged during a campus competition, sparking a newfound interest in stand-up comedy. Despite a setback that left him unable to perform for several years, his determination never wavered. Balancing a full-time job at Madison Square Garden, he continued to refine his craft, longing for a break that would allow him to pursue comedy full-time.

The tragic events of September 11, 2001, shook him to the core, prompting a reevaluation of his life’s direction. With the passing of his beloved grandmother in Hong Kong, a spark ignited within him. Fueled by her memory, he returned to New York with a plan to revitalize Chinatown’s nightlife through comedy.

Thus, TakeOut Comedy was born, the first full-time comedy club in Asia. Through teaching and nurturing budding comedians, he became a driving force in developing the local comedy scene. With a passion for public speaking and a belief in the transformative power of laughter, he instilled confidence and creativity in his students.

In 2012, he found love and marriage with a woman he met through the club, a serendipitous union of laughter and wellness. However, recent challenges, from social unrest to the COVID-19 pandemic, have tested the resilience of his comedy club. Despite the difficulties, he remains determined to adapt and persevere, continuing to bring laughter to younger generations and fostering a vibrant comedy community.

At 50, he ventured into new endeavors, becoming a licensed tour guide and teaching improvisation to children. Juggling various part-time jobs while caring for his family, he embraces life with the philosophy of making the most of every moment. And as he stands on stage, basking in the laughter of his audience, he knows that the power of live stand-up comedy remains unchanged, an enduring connection between performer and spectator.

With a nod to his Chinese heritage and a deep appreciation for the resilience of his family, this comedian exemplifies the pursuit of dreams and the ability to find joy in life’s simplest moments. Laughter, he believes, is not only a means of entertainment but also a powerful force for healing and connection. And as he continues to write his own comedic narrative, he proves that with laughter and rice, one can truly savor the richness of life.
