CultureCelebration of Belgian National Day and HM King Philippe's Decade on the Throne in China

On July 21st, the Embassy of Belgium in China hosted a gala event to celebrate the country’s National Day, an occasion marked with equal parts pomp and nostalgia. This day bore a double significance this year, as it also commemorated the 10th anniversary of His Majesty King Philippe’s accession to the throne.

The event was a cordial gathering that took place at the ambassador’s residence, and was attended by Belgians residing in China as well as friends of Belgium. The gathering marked an opportunity to foster the cultural ties between Belgium and China, and to reflect upon the decade-long reign of King Philippe.

The celebrations witnessed a moving farewell speech by the departing ambassador, Jan Hoogmartens. His words were imbued with emotions, as they concluded not only his chapter in China but that of four other Belgian diplomats as well. It was a moment to reminisce about their experiences in the country, as well as to acknowledge the relationships that had been built and the progress achieved during their tenure.

Following Ambassador Hoogmartens’ speech, the guests were treated to a captivating artistic showcase by Jehanne de Biolley, a highly acclaimed Belgian designer. De Biolley has distinguished herself across various artistic mediums including fashion, interior design, and fragrance creation. Her ability to intertwine her Belgian origins with Chinese culture, creating unique and harmonious fusion, has been applauded far and wide.

De Biolley’s talent and contribution to arts had previously been recognized by HM King Philippe himself, who awarded her the title of Knight in the Order of Leopold. The title, named after the first King of the Belgians, is one of the highest honors in Belgium, and De Biolley’s work certainly lives up to the prestigious recognition.

As the day moved into the evening, guests were treated to a spread of traditional Belgian delicacies. The celebration of Belgian culture would have been incomplete without a nod to the country’s culinary treasures. Classic Belgian fries, known worldwide for their unique taste and texture, were savored with gusto. To accompany the fries, there was an exquisite selection of Belgian beers, offering guests a taste of the country’s renowned brewing heritage.

And of course, no Belgian feast would be complete without the delicious, golden waffles. This quintessential Belgian delicacy, which has gained international acclaim, added the perfect sweet touch to the celebration.

The event was a heartwarming tribute to the enduring ties between Belgium and China, and a celebration of Belgian culture, heritage, and progress. It served as a fitting recognition of King Philippe’s decade on the throne and a wonderful farewell to the departing Belgian diplomats, marking a day of shared memories and cherished experiences.
