CultureColombia's National Day Celebration: A Testament to Sino-Colombian Relations

On July 27th, Beijing became a hub of vibrant colors, music, and dance, reflecting the rich culture of Colombia as its embassy celebrated the country’s National Day. With Colombian Ambassador Sergio Cabrera at the helm, the event not only commemorated Colombia’s heritage but also marked an intention to foster and deepen cultural exchanges between Colombia and China.

The ceremony saw the esteemed presence of Ambassador Qiu Xiaoqi, who serves as China’s Special Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean. In attendance were 350 guests, a mix of dignitaries from various diplomatic missions, key state and party officials, provincial government representatives, and influential figures from the business world.

Taking the stage, Ambassador Cabrera passionately articulated his lifelong dedication to culture, viewing it as a portal that unlocks opportunities for international dialogue. He highlighted the Colombian Embassy‘s extensive cultural plans in China, touching upon upcoming initiatives spanning literature, gastronomy, visual arts, cinema, and music.

Ambassador Cabrera’s recent endeavors to promote Colombian culture across China came into the spotlight. In June, he actively participated in events across various Chinese cities. A particularly notable event was in Chongqing, Southwest China, where he delved into Colombian literature and cinema. Engaging in a deep conversation with the renowned Colombian author, Héctor Abad, they discussed the film adaptation of ‘El olvido que seremos’ or ‘Forgotten We’ll Be’. Moreover, in collaboration with the Foreign Affairs Office of Chongqing, a live radio broadcast celebrated Colombian music. The airwaves were filled with the lively beats of Cumbia, Salsa, and Vallenato, and the enchanting melodies played on the Caucasian flute, a significant instrument symbolizing the camaraderie between Colombia and China, especially after its pivotal role in a 2022 concert.

Furthermore, the ambassador emphasized the symbiotic relationship between Colombia and China, especially the deep ties with Chongqing, shedding light on the collaboration in diverse sectors like education, culture, trade, and more.

In a poignant moment, Ambassador Cabrera recited a timeless proverb that resonated with the essence of the event: “Neither towering mountains nor vast seas can part those who share aligned ideals and visions.” Drawing a parallel with this ancient wisdom, he stated, “While separated by geography, Colombia and China remain steadfastly connected by shared aspirations. Our mutual pursuit of peace, sustainable development, environmental protection, and mutual prosperity stands as a testament to this bond.”

The evening culminated in a culinary and artistic treat. Attendees savored traditional Colombian delicacies, including the world-renowned coffee and sumptuous chocolates. The ambiance was further elevated by captivating traditional Colombian dance performances, leaving an indelible mark on the attendees.
