Celebrating Beijing’s Heartbeat: 2023 Beijing Central Axis International Art Week

CultureArtCelebrating Beijing’s Heartbeat: 2023 Beijing Central Axis International Art Week

From August 19 to 27, 2023, the pulsating heartbeat of ancient Beijing, the Central Axis, is set to enchant residents and visitors alike. The city’s storied central spine becomes the focal point of the Beijing Central Axis International Art Week. With a rich tapestry of events and artistic showcases, this week-long celebration promises an immersive journey into the depth and dynamism of Beijing’s historical and cultural legacy.

Over the course of the art week, 22 unique art performances will captivate audiences. These are set to take place in various theaters dotting the Central Axis. The eclectic lineup ranges from mesmerizing dramas and dynamic dance shows to soul-stirring concerts, evocative operas, and the enchanting intricacies of shadow puppetry. Add to that an array of folk art programs, and attendees are in for a diverse cultural treat.

But the celebration isn’t just restricted to indoor performances. The streets and landmarks along the Central Axis will come alive with guided city walks. Led by expert sociologists, these walks aim to transform the very act of strolling into a deeply cultural and educational exploration of Beijing’s historical sites. In a special initiative, expatriates living in Beijing will have an exclusive opportunity. They’re being extended an invitation to the Tianqiao Museum where they can delve into the mesmerizing world of folk performing arts and witness traditional acrobatic spectacles.

Speaking about the grandeur and significance of the art week, Kang Xi, who is affiliated with the Beijing Central Axis Protection Foundation, shed light on the larger purpose of the initiative. Beyond the festivities and performances, the nine-day event’s core objective is to amplify public understanding and appreciation of the Central Axis. By infusing the week with a variety of art forms and events, organizers aim to bridge the gap between modern-day Beijing and its age-old cultural heritage.

The Central Axis isn’t merely a geographical construct; it’s the very essence of Beijing. Often described as Beijing’s soul and backbone, the Central Axis spans an impressive 7.8 kilometers. This central thoroughfare commences at the Yongding Gate in the city’s south, making its way through iconic landmarks like the Zhengyang Gate, the vast expanse of Tiananmen Square, the majestic Forbidden City, and the serene Jingshan Hill. Its journey culminates in the north with the historically significant Drum Tower and Bell Tower.

The Central Axis’s historical significance is unparalleled. It began to take its iconic form during the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), marking a pivotal era when Beijing was crowned the nation’s capital. Representing the heart of the old city, the Central Axis epitomizes the essence of traditional Beijing’s urban design.

In a bid to garner international recognition for this integral part of Beijing’s identity, the city took a monumental step earlier this year. January witnessed Beijing officially proposing the Central Axis to be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The proposal’s fate now rests with the 21 member countries of the World Heritage Committee. Their decision, expected during the committee’s 46th annual conference in 2024, will determine if the Central Axis secures its place on the coveted World Heritage List. This initiative coincided with the implementation of a robust protection management plan, charting the conservation course for the Central Axis from 2022 to 2035.
