The Sixth Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo is set to take place in Dunhuang, in Northwest China’s Gansu Province, on September 6 and 7, as announced in a recent press conference. Since its inception in 2016, the Expo has been organized five times, aiming to foster comprehensive, multi-faceted, and high-level cultural exchange and cooperation between the provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities of China and countries along the Silk Road. The event features a series of activities including meetings, seminars, exhibitions, cultural performances, and cultural industry promotions, serving as a crucial platform for enhancing people-to-people exchanges.
The year 2023 is particularly significant as it marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Accordingly, the opening ceremony is expected to be attended by more than 1,200 guests from countries such as China, Turkmenistan, Madagascar, and Croatia, along with representatives from UNESCO. According to Xinhua News Agency, Turkmenistan has been designated as the guest of honor for this year’s expo.
The upcoming expo will host three major seminars focusing on the development of smart radio and television, the creation of film and television dramas, and the role of radio, television, and internet audiovisual agents. Additionally, a separate seminar dedicated to Dunhuang will also take place.
The Dunhuang expo is a significant national-level event centered around international cultural exchanges related to the Silk Road. A notable feature of this year’s expo will be the launch of the first “open digital database of Dunhuang,” which aims to facilitate the global dissemination of Dunhuang culture. To date, 18 official accounts have been created on various overseas social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. These platforms have been utilized to share content from previous symposiums, garnering a total of 420 million views and 1.73 million fans, as reported by Zhang Binqiang, director of the Gansu provincial government information office.
