From Rockhampton to the World Stage: Lorinda May Merrypor’s Musical Journey

CultureArtFrom Rockhampton to the World Stage: Lorinda May Merrypor's Musical Journey

Raised in the city of Rockhampton, Queensland, Lorinda May Merrypor was no stranger to the joys of singing and dancing. As a young girl, her love for musical theater was ignited not by live productions but rather by televised versions, such as the popular High School Musical, which she keenly watched on her parents’ television.

Rockhampton, with its limited cultural offerings, hardly ever caught the attention of significant touring musical productions. For Merrypor, it wasn’t until a school trip to Brisbane where she experienced the magic of live theater – watching the global sensation, Wicked. The allure of the orchestra and the magnificence of the stage brought tears to her eyes, marking the very moment she decided her future lay on the stage.

A decade post that transformative experience, Merrypor’s dreams were not only realized but exceeded. As she stepped into the shoes of Juliet in the Australian rendition of the much-acclaimed musical ‘& Juliet’, audiences were captivated. This wasn’t the tragic Shakespearean heroine people knew; this was a modern, empowered Juliet who commands her destiny to the tunes of pop anthems. Not only did Merrypor become a sensation in Australia, but she’s also set to captivate audiences in Singapore during the musical’s Asian premiere.

Her journey to the title role of ‘& Juliet’ was paved with a blend of dedication, raw talent, and self-belief. Despite her sterling performance at Griffith University’s Queensland Conservatorium, Merrypor never anticipated landing the lead, expecting at most to be an understudy. The realization of her dream often leaves her in disbelief, a testament to her humility and the magnitude of her achievement.

“& Juliet”, conceptualized by Emmy Award-winning David West Read, reimagines the story of Romeo and Juliet with a delightful twist. The plot ventures into a ‘what if’ scenario where Juliet, rather than succumbing to a tragic end, embarks on her journey of self-discovery. Weaving in hits from Swedish pop sensation Max Martin, this jukebox musical harmoniously combines tragedy with chart-toppers like Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time” and Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life”. This modern and refreshing take on the classic tragedy earned mixed reviews but bagged significant awards and nominations both in London and on Broadway.

Merrypor’s mastery is evident in her effortless transformation of iconic pop songs into soulful expressions of Juliet’s emotional arc. Despite the pressures, she ensures that Juliet’s renditions remain distinct from those of pop icons like Britney Spears or Kelly Clarkson. The challenge of high-energy dance sequences coupled with demanding vocal performances is one she tackles head-on.

For Merrypor, her success is not just personal. As an indigenous artist with a lineage tracing back to the South Sea Islands and the Kuungkari tribe, her rise serves as an inspiration for many. Representation in the arts remains a significant challenge, and seeing individuals like Merrypor take the lead in major productions is a beacon of hope for many aspiring artists. Roles for actors of color have often been confined to the peripheries, and Merrypor’s ascent is a testament to breaking such barriers.

Acknowledging the industry’s gradual move towards diversity and inclusivity, it’s noteworthy that productions like ‘& Juliet’ and ‘Hamilton’ are leading the charge with casting choices. The former features Casey Donovan, another indigenous Australian artist, and introduces a non-binary character, May, played by Jesse Dutlow.

For now, after a successful run in Australia, Merrypor is enjoying a brief sabbatical. Yet, the call of the stage is ever-present. The actress eagerly awaits her next stint in Singapore, ready to enchant audiences once again with her rendition of a modern, empowered Juliet.
