Kodaline’s Journey: From Heart-Wrenching Ballads to Maturing Sound

CultureKodaline’s Journey: From Heart-Wrenching Ballads to Maturing Sound

During their 2023 Asian tour, renowned Irish band Kodaline made a pitstop in Hong Kong, sharing insights on their musical journey. Known for their emotive anthems like “All I Want”, “High Hopes”, and “Brother”, the band’s return to Asia seemed both nostalgic and refreshing.

The Post had the opportunity to connect with band members Mark Prendergast and Jason Boland. Their vibrant discussion unveiled the inspirations behind their music and their continuous evolution as artists.

Speaking of their return to Asia, Boland reflected, “Each time we visit, it feels like a new revelation. We’re revisiting places that now have a tinge of familiarity, yet every experience feels fresh and unique.”

Kodaline’s recent album, “Our Roots Run Deep,” was a departure from their traditional style. Recorded live, the album fused their hit songs with some covers. Discussing the genesis of this live recording, Boland shed light on the aftermath of the pandemic. “Post-lockdown, we tested the waters with acoustic shows in Ireland, reconnecting with the essence of being a band. Witnessing the magic of these performances, we were compelled to capture it.” The chosen venue, the 3Olympia Theatre in Dublin, resonated deeply with them, having hosted iconic live albums and concerts.

Prendergast opened up about the emotional depths from which their music emerges. “Our most profound songs often stem from our lowest points,” he admitted. Drawing from personal experiences like heartbreak, their first album was influenced by shared emotional turmoils. He elaborated, “Our anthems, despite carrying dark lyrics, strike a chord with the audience. The authenticity of emotions, often sorrowful, resonates.”

Addressing the often-repeated narrative of artists becoming disillusioned with their most significant hits, Boland and Prendergast shared a contrasting perspective. For Kodaline, performing their hits is exhilarating. Prendergast said, “The energy and reactions from fans breathe new life into our songs every night. For instance, performing ‘All I Want’ is a magical experience, where the audience becomes a single, unified entity.”

Reflecting on their musical journey, the duo highlighted their experiments with different approaches for each album. “Our first album was pressure-free. By the second, we were racing against time. The third saw multiple collaborations,” shared Prendergast. He emphasized the importance of the band’s chemistry, noting that external influences sometimes dilute the core essence.

However, as they matured, their musical process also evolved. Boland elaborated, “We’re more secure now, personally and professionally. We’ve found a rhythm in writing and touring that doesn’t feel forced. While we’re continually working on new material, there’s less rush in releasing it.”

In a world that’s constantly evolving, Kodaline stands testament to the power of authenticity, proving that genuine emotions, combined with an adaptive spirit, pave the way for lasting connections with fans across continents.
