CultureMariinsky Orchestra Charms at Beijing Performing Arts Centre Debut

The heart of Beijing resonated with the melodious tunes of classic compositions as the internationally acclaimed Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of the celebrated Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, made its grand debut at the newly inaugurated Beijing Performing Arts Centre. The Wednesday evening performance marked the orchestra as the first significant international ensemble to grace the state-of-the-art venue.

A night rich in musical depth and soulful execution unfolded as they performed classic masterpieces such as the Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, and Pictures at an Exhibition, among others. The exceptional acoustics of the venue only amplified the artistic prowess of the performers, ensuring that every note and rhythm was experienced in its full splendor by the captivated audience.

Gergiev, known for his distinctive style of conducting with a toothpick, enjoys immense popularity among Chinese music aficionados. A devoted admirer, Wu, who has ardently followed Gergiev’s performances across various cities like Shanghai and Beijing, commented on the vastness and gravity of the pieces chosen for the performance. According to Wu, pieces like Pictures at an Exhibition and Firebird are in themselves monumental enough to headline any concert. The addition of more compositions to the evening’s repertoire only underscored the orchestra’s dedication to their craft and their audience.

The harmonious realm of music often defies political and geographical boundaries. As Gergiev faced criticism from certain Western musical circles following the Russia-Ukraine tensions, a wave of Chinese netizens rose in defense, decrying the act of directing geopolitical grievances towards art and artists.

Setting aside all external discords, the evening at the Beijing Performing Arts Centre was a tribute to the unifying spirit of music. The event commenced with a heartfelt rendition of We Walk on a Wide Road, eliciting heartfelt applause and appreciation for this special offering.

Gergiev, with his astute guidance, then navigated the orchestra through the evocative Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture and Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. These renditions, replete with ethereal melodies, showcased a side of Russian orchestral music that veered away from traditional interpretations. The familiarity of Pictures at an Exhibition was rendered with such finesse that it painted a vivid musical canvas for the audience.

Post intermission, the spotlight shone on Stravinsky’s iconic Firebird, a piece that holds special significance for the Mariinsky Theatre. The rendition was an electrifying blend of intensity and nuance. The concluding piece resonated in the hall, drawing an overwhelming response from the audience.

Expressing his delight post-performance, Gergiev remarked, “We are very much enjoying the new hall here… I anticipate a bright future here for not only brilliant Chinese musicians but also for talents from across the globe.”

Thomas Wulfrank, a Belgian acoustician integral to the venue’s design, expressed his satisfaction with the new establishment. Having experienced his first Russian concert, distinct from the German ones he’s accustomed to, Wulfrank voiced hope for more such transcultural exchanges in the coming times.
