In the vast, sun-baked expanses of Nevada’s desert, the Burning Man Festival annually curates a world of phantasmagoric creativity, drawing around 80,000 participants from every corner of the globe. These dreamers and artists gather for 8 days, transforming the barren landscape into a sprawling canvas of imaginative artworks. In 2023, amidst the festival’s vast panorama of installations inspired by the theme “Animal Kingdom,” an artistic marvel rose to prominence: “Mona,” an 8-meter-tall metal rabbit designed by the Chinese artist, He Miao.

He Miao, born amidst the bucolic beauty of Shehong in Sichuan Province, interwove her childhood memories with her artistic expression. The lush vistas of green mountains and crystalline waters of her homeland resonated in her work, as did the tender reminiscences of cherished pet rabbits. It wasn’t just personal memories that molded Mona; a blend of Western and Eastern tales contributed to its creation. The whimsical narrative of Alice in Wonderland found a harmonious confluence with the ancient Chinese zodiac tradition, where the rabbit holds an esteemed position among the 12 symbolic animals.

From a vantage point, Mona’s facade gave the illusion of a gigantic pink inflatable toy, its hue contrasting starkly against the desert backdrop. However, upon closer inspection, the truth of its construction was revealed. The rabbit was an intricate mosaic of metal pieces, meticulously welded and shaped to perfection. The magnificence of Chinese artistry was palpable in every curve and joint, compelling spectators to pause, admire, and often audibly gasp in wonderment.

Beyond its aesthetic allure, Mona evolved into a pivotal landmark at the festival. Given its imposing stature, vivacious pink coloration, and elevated position amid the plethora of animal-themed installations, it served as a beacon. Lost festival-goers could orient themselves using Mona or utilize it as a reference point to navigate back to their camps.

The allure of the metal rabbit transcended its visual grandeur. Mona became an epicenter for impromptu festivities and community gatherings. Thousands donned rabbit costumes, parading in jubilant bunny-themed marches around the sculpture. Underneath its shadow, couples exchanged vows, making eternal commitments in one of the most surreal settings imaginable. Adjacently, art-and-music cars parked, their sounds and rhythms urging all in proximity to partake in the celebrations. Daring rock-climbing enthusiasts viewed Mona from a different lens, seeing in it a formidable challenge, and attempted to ascend it as they would a rugged cliff.

In creating Mona, He Miao made a profound statement. Through her artwork, she channelled the essence of traditional Chinese culture, presenting it as a modern-day art form. It wasn’t just about showcasing the prowess of Chinese creativity; it was a deeper message of unity and collaboration. He Miao envisioned her Mona Rabbit as an artistic diplomat, journeying across continents, conveying messages of hope, unity, and a brighter tomorrow.
