Clockenflap, Hong Kong’s premier music and arts festival, is gearing up for its second round of celebrations in 2023, following a triumphant return earlier in March. This year’s festival, set to unfold at the Central Harbourfront, promises a distinct experience, differentiating itself from the March edition and aligning with Clockenflap’s traditional winter schedule.
Justin Sweeting, the co-founder and music head of Clockenflap, explains the decision behind hosting two festivals in one year. “We wanted to bring back the essence of Clockenflap without having to wait until late 2024,” he says. “This December edition is an attempt to reconnect with our regular schedule and offer something fresh and appealing to a broader audience.”
The December lineup, crafted to appeal to a younger demographic, also includes a stronger representation of prominent regional Asian acts. Sweeting emphasizes the importance of delivering a true Clockenflap experience, balancing the diverse acts and festival activities to ensure a weekend full of fun and discovery.
Among the acts Sweeting is excited about are Idles and Otoboke Beaver, both known for their electrifying performances. Idles, a post-punk band from Bristol, England, have garnered critical acclaim and Grammy nominations. Otoboke Beaver, an all-female punk-rock band from Kyoto, Japan, have been praised by Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters for their intense and mind-blowing performances.
Sweeting is also enthusiastic about American singer Caroline Polachek’s artistry and the lively performances of groups like ADG7 and Idiotape. “Music festivals are about discovering new acts, and Clockenflap provides a platform for these unique experiences,” he remarks.
What sets Clockenflap apart is the synergy between the musicians and the audience, creating a one-of-a-kind atmosphere where shared moments come alive. This year’s festival has already seen a high demand for tickets, with three-day passes selling out in record time. While Friday tickets are sold out, single-day passes for Saturday and Sunday remain available, offering music enthusiasts the chance to partake in this vibrant cultural event.
Clockenflap 2023 promises a blend of music, arts, and communal experiences, cementing its status as a not-to-be-missed event in Hong Kong’s cultural calendar. Whether you’re a returning fan or a first-time attendee, the festival is poised to offer an unforgettable weekend of discovery, excitement, and artistic inspiration.
