This December, three Australian firefighters, renowned for their appearances in the celebrated Australian Firefighter Calendar, traveled to Hong Kong for a unique culinary promotion. Their mission was to celebrate Tam Jai International’s expansion into the Australian market and to help launch the company’s new Hot Dish series, which features noodles served on individual stoves. Tam Jai International is the parent company of popular noodle chains TamJai SamGor and TamJai Yunnan Mixian.
The Australian Firefighter Calendar, an annual publication now in its third decade, has evolved from a fun fundraising initiative into a global sensation. Offering six different versions, including classic, dogs, cats, horses, mixed animals, and a hero-themed calendar, it caters to a wide range of tastes. According to Ricky Smith, cover model for the 2024 classic calendar, these calendars include a variety of effects featuring fire and smoke.
While firefighter calendars are produced in various countries, Australia’s version is the most renowned. Since its inception, it has raised millions of dollars for Australian charities, including Kids with Cancer, Native Animal Rescue, and the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital. The calendar’s popularity has reached over 100 countries, as noted by Brandon Purvis, the cover model for the 2024 dogs calendar, and Michael Galanos, who is featured in October in the classic calendar.
The models, actual firefighters, are not accustomed to fame. Smith, a member of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services in Brisbane, remarks on the novelty of their sudden celebrity status. The promotion of Tam Jai’s Hot Dish series brought them into the limelight, although only Galanos professes a preference for spicy food, enjoying the “spicy hotpot” offered in Hong Kong and noting the freshness and taste difference compared to Chinese food in Australia. Purvis, too, is an aficionado of Chinese cuisine, which he frequently enjoys back home.
Their presence in Hong Kong serves a dual purpose: to promote a spicy dish and to embody the essence of their fiery calendars. However, they remain aware of their primary roles as public servants who risk their lives for community safety. Recalling dangerous situations, Smith emphasizes the importance of their training in preparing them for various emergencies. Purvis echoes this sentiment, highlighting the focus and trust in their training and team during high-adrenaline situations.
The upcoming months pose a significant challenge for these firefighters, as Australian authorities predict increased bushfire risks due to an impending El Niño summer. They advise Australians to be prepared, have a plan in place, and heed local government warnings. Smith and Purvis stress the importance of prioritizing life over property and staying safe during these precarious times.
The visit of these Australian firefighters to Hong Kong represents a unique intersection of bravery and culinary promotion, emphasizing not just the allure of spicy food but also the dedication and courage inherent in their profession.
