“The Brothers Sun,” Netflix’s upcoming series starring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, is set to make waves with its unique blend of black comedy, familial themes, and action-packed narrative. After her critically acclaimed performances in “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “American Born Chinese,” Yeoh returns to her action roots in “The Brothers Sun.” She portrays Eileen “Mama” Sun, a character intertwined in a narrative of crime and family dynamics. The series follows the lives of her two sons, Charles and Bruce Sun, who lead contrasting lives due to their upbringing and familial circumstances.
Charles Sun, played by Justin Chien, is a hardened Taiwanese gangster, molded under the influence of his crime boss father, Johnny Kou. In contrast, Bruce Sun, portrayed by Sam Song Li, is raised in California, shielded from the family’s criminal endeavors by his mother, Eileen. The series takes a dramatic turn when an assassination attempt on the family patriarch brings Charles from Taipei to Los Angeles, unveiling the family’s true nature to Bruce and setting the stage for conflict and self-discovery.
For Justin Chien, “The Brothers Sun” resonated with his own life, particularly the emphasis on family values and respect, drawing parallels to his upbringing in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Similarly, Sam Song Li, born in Shenzhen and raised in Southern California, found a deep connection with his character, Bruce. The series’ setting in the San Gabriel Valley, where Li grew up, adds an authentic touch to the narrative, enhancing the portrayal of cultural and familial themes.
Both Chien and Li expressed their awe and excitement in working alongside Michelle Yeoh. Chien recalls feeling validated and encouraged by Yeoh’s supportive gestures, while Li highlights the natural chemistry and warmth Yeoh brought to their on-screen mother-son relationship.
