CultureArtGuilin Art Festival and Global Chinese Youth Theater Director Talent Program Unveil Exciting October Line-up

Last Wednesday, during a press conference held in Beijing, exciting plans were announced for a series of activities to take place in late October as part of the Guilin Art Festival and Global Chinese Youth Theater Director Talent Program. This event is designed to promote and highlight the rich and diverse Chinese cultural spirit through the medium of theater, underlining themes of beauty, harmony, and peaceful coexistence.

This year’s art festival, carrying the theme “Coexistence,” sets to underline the quintessential essence of Chinese culture, with its focus on aesthetic refinement, harmonious balance, and the concept of harmonious coexistence. It aims to accentuate the fundamental values within Chinese society that recognize the co-existence of all beings and things as an intricate and indissoluble part of life and the universe.

The venue for the upcoming event, the esteemed Guilin Theater, is situated in South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It bears an important and distinctive position in the rich tapestry of Chinese theater history. This theater was the backdrop to a historic event in 1944 – the Southwest Drama Exhibition. This was a three-month-long performance festival hosted by Chinese theater artists that brought together almost 1,000 people from a wide array of artistic and literary groups. During this event, they performed 179 shows, marking an unparalleled incident in the annals of Chinese drama.

The Guilin Art Festival is not a new event; it was successfully inaugurated last year from December 10th to 18th, 2022. The theme for the debut festival was “Mountains and Waters Meet,” a concept deeply rooted in Chinese philosophy, representing the harmonious blending of diverse elements. This maiden festival saw the staging of 29 outstanding domestic and foreign plays, indicating the richness of the theater scene within and beyond China.

Looking ahead to the upcoming art festival in October, there is a palpable sense of anticipation, not just within China but also internationally. The event is not merely a celebration of theater, but also an invitation to appreciate the deeply embedded ethos within Chinese culture, drawing upon themes of harmony, beauty, and coexistence. This Festival is a vibrant illustration of how art can act as a cultural conduit, connecting individuals, communities, and nations.
