Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving” – A Festive Slasher Film Feast for Horror Fans

CultureFilm & TvEli Roth's "Thanksgiving" – A Festive Slasher Film Feast for Horror Fans

Eli Roth, a renowned name in the horror genre, has expanded his repertoire of spine-chilling films with “Thanksgiving,” a holiday-themed slasher film set to terrorize a small New England town. The movie, which evolved from a fake trailer in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s 2007 anthology “Grindhouse,” now stands as a full-length feature, marking sixteen years since its original conception. “Thanksgiving” pays homage to classic horror films, from “Scream” to “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” continuing Roth’s journey in the genre that began with hits like “Cabin Fever” and “Hostel.”

The story of “Thanksgiving” unfolds with a Black Friday riot at a local superstore, setting a bloody and frenetic tone for the film. A year after this deadly incident, the town is rocked by a series of gruesome murders as they prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday. The plot thickens when a group of friends, who witnessed the previous year’s carnage, become the focus of ominous social media messages from someone using the alias “John Carver” – the name of the town’s first mayor and now a popular mask during the festivities.

The film centers around Jessica (played by Nell Verlaque), the daughter of the superstore owner, entangled in a love triangle with her current boyfriend Ryan (Milo Manheim) and her ex, Bobby (Jalen Thomas Brooks), who returns to town amidst the emerging chaos. As the body count rises, the suspense intensifies, with a host of suspects emerging in Roth and Rendell’s intricately woven script. The responsibility of unmasking the killer falls to the local sheriff, portrayed by Patrick Dempsey, racing against time to prevent further bloodshed.

Roth’s signature style of unrestrained, gory terror is on full display in “Thanksgiving,” offering a veritable feast of creative kills and dark humor. The film is a blood-soaked journey, not for the faint-hearted, featuring a series of brutal impalings, beheadings, and inventive murders that will satisfy even the most demanding horror aficionados.

While “Thanksgiving” may not be the conventional choice for family movie nights, it stands as a potential cornerstone for a new slasher franchise. Its blend of holiday cheer and horror is set to carve out a unique niche, offering slasher fans a new reason to be thankful during the festive season.
