Exploring Fate and Power in ‘My Demon’: A New Fantasy Romcom on Netflix

CultureFilm & TvExploring Fate and Power in 'My Demon': A New Fantasy Romcom on Netflix

Netflix’s new fantasy romcom, ‘My Demon,’ featuring stars Song Kang and Kim Yoo-jung, aims to captivate audiences with a blend of romance and supernatural elements. Set in a world where ancient myths intertwine with modern dilemmas, this show targets fans of traditional K-drama narratives, while offering unique twists.

The series opens with an introduction to the concept of demons, derived from the ancient Greek word ‘daimai.’ However, the show takes creative liberties with this etymology, tying it to the theme of fate. Central to the story is Jeong Gu-won (Song), a centuries-old demon who trades in human souls, granting wishes in exchange for a decade of dream living before claiming his due.

Gu-won, characterized by his striking silk robes and an imposing chamber of ticking clocks, is the epitome of a powerful, otherworldly being. Each clock represents a soul bound to him, and upon their time’s completion, he fulfills his end of the bargain in a dramatic fashion.

Parallel to Gu-won’s story is Do Do-hee (Kim), a savvy young investor and adopted daughter of Mirae Group’s chairwoman, Ju Cheon-sook (Kim Hae-sook). Do-hee is portrayed as ambitious and somewhat arrogant, a stark contrast to Gu-won’s enigmatic nature. The power dynamics within Do-hee’s family, especially with Cheon-sook’s health in decline, set the stage for an impending conflict.

Their paths cross under unusual circumstances during a blind date mix-up. Do-hee, seeking to escape her adoptive mother’s incessant matchmaking, unknowingly encounters Gu-won. Their meeting is marked by tension and misunderstanding, setting the tone for their complex relationship.

As the narrative unfolds, a mysterious killer targeting individuals within Mirae emerges, linking to a larger scheme and a looming inheritance battle. Do-hee becomes a target, placing her in Gu-won’s path once again. In a desperate moment, she unwittingly makes a deal with Gu-won, leading to unexpected consequences, including the transfer of a mysterious cross tattoo and the loss of Gu-won’s powers.

‘My Demon’ excels in subverting the power dynamics between its protagonists. Gu-won’s loss of power and Do-hee’s precarious position within her family add depth to their characters, moving beyond the archetypical roles often seen in K-dramas. However, the show sometimes struggles to maintain engagement, with secondary characters and storylines feeling somewhat formulaic.

Despite these challenges, ‘My Demon’ holds promise, especially for viewers seeking a blend of fantasy, romance, and drama. The series offers an opportunity to explore themes of fate, power, and the human condition, all within the familiar comforts of a K-drama format.
