At San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, Prime Video unveiled an exciting new addition to its hit series “The Boys” universe: a prequel titled “Vought Rising.” The announcement revealed that Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash would star in the new series. Paul Grellong, the executive producer of “The Boys,” will also take on the role of showrunner for “Vought Rising.”
In addition to the prequel news, Ackles confirmed that he would reprise his role as Soldier Boy in the upcoming fifth season of “The Boys.” The show, known for its gritty and irreverent take on the superhero genre, follows a group of vigilantes who battle corrupt super-powered individuals, known as “Supes.”
The panel for “The Boys” at Comic-Con kicked off with a comedic live musical performance featuring songs from the show, setting a lively tone for the event. Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who stars as CIA analyst Joe Kessler in the upcoming fourth season, hosted the panel and playfully honored the musical composer with a middle-finger gesture, mirroring the show’s crude humor. Clips from the series, including the Season 4 song “Let’s Put the Christ Back in Christmas” from the show’s parody of “Disney on Ice,” were projected on screen as performers sang.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s lively moderation continued with a surprise appearance by Jessie T. Usher, who portrays the speedster A-Train, performing a rap on stage. The panel also included a teaser trailer for Season 2 of the spin-off series “Gen V.”
The main cast of “The Boys” graced the stage, including Antony Starr (Homelander), Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, Chace Crawford, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capone, Jessie T. Usher, and Karen Fukuhara, along with the series creator Eric Kripke. Kripke shared that Season 5, premiering in 2026, would be the final season of “The Boys,” aligning with his vision for the comic-book adaptation.
“The Boys” franchise has also expanded with the animated series “The Boys Presents: Diabolical,” further exploring the rich universe of the original show.
San Diego Comic-Con 2024 marked a significant return for stars and major announcements after a subdued event last year, which was impacted by the 2023 writers and actors strikes. The return of A-list celebrities and Hall H panels brought back the excitement and big industry news that fans eagerly anticipated.
With the announcement of “Vought Rising” and updates on the upcoming seasons of “The Boys” and its spin-offs, fans have much to look forward to as the series continues to expand its unique take on the superhero genre.
