Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek caused a sensation at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) when they walked the red carpet for the premiere of Without Blood. Directed by Jolie, the film is a powerful exploration of war’s lasting effects, focusing on the themes of violence, revenge, and memory. It marks Jolie’s fifth directorial credit and features Hayek in a leading role, with Demian Bichir co-starring.
The film, adapted from Italian author Alessandro Baricco’s novel of the same name, is set in the aftermath of an unnamed conflict. Much of the story unfolds in a single room, with flashbacks providing crucial context. The movie delves into the relationship between a victim and their perpetrator, long after the war has ended. Jolie not only directed the film but also wrote and produced it, showcasing her multifaceted talent behind the camera.
Jolie and Hayek, who developed a close friendship during their time working on Eternals in 2021, have maintained their bond ever since. Speaking about Jolie’s achievements, Hayek praised her friend: “It’s an incredible year for Angie,” noting her recent portrayal of opera legend Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s Maria, which also premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
Demian Bichir, who plays a key role in Without Blood, described the film as one of the most challenging projects of his career. Known for his Oscar-nominated performance in A Better Life (2011), Bichir lauded both the film’s artistic value and Hayek’s evolution as an actor. “Seeing Salma continue to grow and excel in her craft has been an incredible experience,” Bichir remarked.
Hayek, who began her career in Mexican telenovelas and rose to international fame with her portrayal of painter Frida Kahlo in Frida (2002), continues to shine in a range of roles. She has recently appeared in films like House of Gucci (2021) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), further solidifying her place in Hollywood.
While a general release date for Without Blood has not yet been announced, the film has already generated excitement, with Fremantle set to handle distribution. Fans of both Jolie and Hayek are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see this thought-provoking film in theaters.
