Mike Kerr, the lead singer of the popular rock band Royal Blood, shared his thoughts on the significance of rock music in America. He emphasized that rock’n’roll is ingrained in the American culture, as evidenced by the ubiquity of guitar solos on the radio, no matter where you are in the country.
Royal Blood, a duo consisting of Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher, has achieved considerable success in the United States. Their debut album climbed to number 17 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, while their subsequent album, “Typhoons,” reached number 48. Despite these accomplishments, Kerr expressed that he and Thatcher do not obsess over rankings because they are beyond their control. Instead, they focus their energy on being the best band they can be and let the rest unfold naturally.
Kerr expressed a newfound confidence in his lyricism on their latest album, “Back to the Water Below.” He noted that there is often a temptation in rock music to conceal oneself behind the boisterousness of the music. However, on this record, there are moments when the music quietens down, allowing Kerr to feel more exposed and revealed. Thatcher described the lead single, “Mountains At Midnight,” as a classic Royal Blood rock song, while other tracks like “Pull Me Through” offer a more reflective perspective.
Kerr explained that “Pull Me Through” delves into the theme of seeking help from others to overcome challenging emotions or situations. He found it relatively easy to write from a place of feeling submerged, as the song explores the importance of reaching out for support.
The willingness of Royal Blood to explore deeper emotional themes while maintaining their signature rock sound demonstrates the band’s evolution and growth. Their dedication to improving as musicians and their ability to create impactful music continues to resonate with fans worldwide.
