Jaeson Yoo’s Musical Journey with Cover Band Jabroni

CultureMusic & TheaterJaeson Yoo's Musical Journey with Cover Band Jabroni

Jaeson Yoo, the lead guitarist of the cover band Jabroni, skillfully navigates his dual existence, balancing a passion for music with his professional life. Born in Korea and moving abroad at the age of nine, Yoo returned to Korea in 2011, carrying with him a deep-seated love for guitar music that he had nurtured since childhood. His musical journey, however, didn’t officially start until his college days, where he began learning the guitar and making home recordings.

In 2018, Yoo’s musical aspirations took a more serious turn when he formed a Beatles tribute band, the Beagles, followed by joining another tribute band, the Mentles, in 2019. These projects were initially focused on recreating the magic of The Beatles on stage. However, Yoo’s latest venture, Jabroni, formed in late 2021, takes a broader approach as a general cover band.

Jabroni’s repertoire is extensive, featuring 38 Beatles songs and 73 tracks by 58 other artists, ranging from Elvis and Queen to Oasis and Lady Gaga. Yoo emphasizes the band’s spirit of inclusivity and democratic process in selecting their songs, ensuring each track is chosen unanimously by the band members.

The band, originally a Beatles-inspired group, evolved into Jabroni, a name symbolizing their light-hearted approach to music. Yoo’s current bandmates, including Mistarr Park, who adds an eccentric flair with his quirky costumes and makeup, contribute to Jabroni’s unique style. French keyboardist Yohan Lepoetre brings an international flavor to the group, fostering a blend of various musical styles and cultures.

Jabroni’s rhythm section, featuring Jang Seok-won on drums and Lee Woo-young on bass, is praised by Yoo for its excellence. Vocalist Jang Min-hwa, guitarist Mike Choo, and singer Steve Pearson are also integral to the band’s diverse sound.

Yoo’s wife, Yun Hai-young, plays a crucial role as the band’s manager and top fan, offering unwavering support and constructive feedback during rehearsals. Her belief in the band’s talent is a testament to their musical prowess.

While many of Jabroni’s members are career-driven professionals, the band thrives on a live gig-to-gig basis, focusing on the joy of playing music and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships within the group. Yoo’s philosophy is to cherish the present and appreciate each member’s contribution, ensuring a harmonious and enjoyable journey for everyone involved.
