Roger Waters Rules Out Pink Floyd Reunion, Focuses on New Album and Memoir

CultureMusic & TheaterRoger Waters Rules Out Pink Floyd Reunion, Focuses on New Album and Memoir

Roger Waters has firmly dismissed the idea of a Pink Floyd reunion, stating that he is “busy doing other things,” including working on a new album and writing a memoir. In a recent interview, the guitarist and singer-songwriter reflected on his time with the iconic rock group he co-founded in 1965 but confirmed he has no plans to perform again with his surviving bandmates, drummer Nick Mason and guitarist David Gilmour.

Waters, the creative force behind seminal albums like “The Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Wall,” left Pink Floyd in 1985 following personal and creative differences. His departure led to legal battles over the use of the band’s name as his former bandmates continued without him. Over the years, Waters and Gilmour have been embroiled in one of rock’s most famous feuds, recently clashing on social media over the Russia-Ukraine war.

When asked about the possibility of performing together again, Waters responded, “No, whatever for?” He described the idea of a reunion as a nostalgic desire for some fans but stated, “it’s not in me.”

The last time Pink Floyd performed together was at the Live 8 charity concert in London in 2005. Waters joined Mason, Gilmour, and keyboardist Richard Wright on stage for the event. “We did it. And I don’t regret it because Rick (Wright) was still alive, and I’m so glad that we had the opportunity to at least do three or four numbers,” Waters said. “We played reasonably well and the people liked it. And so I’m really, really glad. Do I want to do anything like it? No, I don’t, particularly as there’s only three of us left alive.”

Wright passed away in 2008, and original frontman Syd Barrett, who left the band in 1968 due to erratic behavior caused by drug abuse, died in 2006. In May, Mason expressed openness to a reunion but acknowledged there was no interest from Waters and Gilmour.

“I’m busy doing other things… it has nothing to do with any rancor or anything. People are different,” Waters explained. “David and I are very, very different people and that’s okay.”

At 80, Waters is currently immersed in his latest project, a new album titled “The Bar,” as well as writing his memoir. “I’ve been working on it for a couple of years… and I’m in sort of an editing process with that now. So, I’m a busy chap,” he said.

As Waters continues to focus on his solo endeavors, fans can look forward to his new musical and literary contributions, while the chapter of a Pink Floyd reunion remains firmly closed.
