The Country Music Awards voters surprised many by snubbing Beyonce’s critically acclaimed album Cowboy Carter while showering country star Morgan Wallen with seven nominations on Monday. Despite the cultural significance and chart success of Cowboy Carter, the album was left out of the nominations, while Wallen emerged as the frontrunner in key categories, including Entertainer of the Year. Wallen is set to compete in that category against Luke Combs, Jelly Roll, Chris Stapleton, and Lainey Wilson.
Wallen’s seven nominations include four for his collaboration with Post Malone on the song I Had Some Help. This recognition further solidifies Wallen’s status as a prominent figure in country music, despite past controversies. Meanwhile, Beyonce’s album Cowboy Carter, which broke barriers by becoming the first album by a Black woman to top the Billboard Top Country Albums chart earlier this year, was conspicuously absent from the list of nominees.
Released in the spring, Cowboy Carter was celebrated for both its artistic merit and cultural impact. Its lead single, Texas Hold ‘Em, made history as the first track by a Black woman to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Despite these milestones, the album was left out of the CMAs, sparking conversation among fans and critics about the challenges faced by Black artists in the country music industry.
Beyonce had previously explained that Cowboy Carter was inspired by her personal experiences of feeling unwelcome within the country music world. The album was viewed by many as both a reclamation of the contributions of Black Americans to country music and a tribute to the genre’s diverse roots. While the album received widespread acclaim for its message and sound, the lack of recognition by the CMAs has left fans disappointed.
Winners of the CMAs will be announced during the televised ceremony, which will be broadcast live on ABC on November 20. As the awards show approaches, conversations around inclusivity and representation within the country music industry are likely to intensify, with Cowboy Carter standing as a key symbol of these ongoing debates.
