Renowned Chinese pop singer Cai Xukun, boasting a staggering 38 million followers on Sina Weibo, a popular social media platform akin to Twitter in China, has recently found himself ensnared in a burgeoning controversy surrounding abortion allegations. As these claims gain traction, the singer, known for his wide fan base and influence, has yet to publicly respond, further fueling speculation.
On Monday, an entertainment blogger on Weibo catapulted Cai into the limelight, alleging that his mother engaged a private investigator in 2021 to keep a watchful eye on a woman who claimed to have become pregnant following an intimate one-night encounter with Cai. Additionally, the blogger alleged that Cai’s mother installed a clandestine pinhole camera at the woman’s doorstep. The woman, known only by the initial ‘C,’ claimed that Cai urged her to terminate the pregnancy, a procedure she underwent on July 5, 2021.
The post detailed that Cai and ‘C’ met on May 20, 2021, at a KTV, a popular karaoke venue, in Beijing’s Chaoyang district. Following the gathering, the two reportedly engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse. The woman discovered her pregnancy approximately a month later, but Cai allegedly implored her to get an abortion. Following the procedure, which she underwent alone, Cai’s mother reportedly started to suspect that the woman might attempt to extort them. Consequently, she purportedly hired a private investigator and installed the pinhole camera in an attempt to disprove the woman’s pregnancy claims. The post included several pieces of supposed evidence, including hospital records documenting the woman’s abortion.
The blogger continued to divulge additional information related to this scandal in live broadcasts, featuring alleged chat transcripts between Cai’s mother and the private investigator and an audio recording purportedly revealing Cai’s mother orchestrating a negotiation with ‘C’ about the abortion and potential financial compensation. According to the blogger, Cai and his mother were eventually summoned by the police, resulting in both parties reaching a compromise and signing a letter of understanding.
As news of the scandal spread, related hashtags quickly dominated Weibo’s trending list, amassing billions of views. Cai’s fans have staunchly defended him, demanding conclusive evidence and dismissing the allegations as unfounded rumors. However, a substantial portion of the online community has implored Cai to address these claims promptly.
Cai Xukun, born in 1998, catapulted to stardom in 2018 after participating in the popular idol survival show, Idol Producer, and becoming the central figure in the Chinese boy band, Nine Percent. After the band disbanded, Cai embarked on a successful solo career, releasing several songs and albums and continuing his reality show appearances, including on “Keep Running.” The current allegations surfaced shortly after Cai concluded the Bangkok leg of his 2023 world tour on Sunday.
