LifestyleFarewell to Balltze: The Celebrated Face Behind "Cheems" Memes

The world of internet culture recently lost one of its most recognizable furry faces. Balltze, the Shiba Inu, renowned as the star of the “Cheems” doge memes, passed away. His demise was announced by his owner, Kathy, from Hong Kong, through a heartfelt message on social media.

Balltze, also affectionately referred to as Ball Ball by many, became a global sensation due to his whimsical, knowing grin. This Shiba Inu’s characteristic smile captured the hearts of countless internet users, making him a favorite subject for memes. These images spread like wildfire, transforming him into one of the internet’s most beloved canines.

However, behind the viral fame, Balltze had a personal battle. At the age of 12, on August 18, he succumbed to cancer. His last moments came during a thoracentesis surgery he was undergoing. Kathy conveyed the sad news to his extensive fan base on Instagram, which comprises hundreds of thousands of followers. She mentioned their initial plans of moving forward with chemotherapy or other treatments post-surgery, but unfortunately, fate had other plans.

In her moving tribute, Kathy urged fans not to dwell in sorrow but to remember the happiness Balltze brought to countless individuals worldwide. During challenging times like the pandemic, Balltze’s jovial memes provided solace and amusement to many. Kathy expressed her belief that Balltze is now in a better place, relishing delectable treats and enjoying the company of new furry friends. Despite his departure, his legacy and the joy he brought will forever remain etched in Kathy’s heart and those of his global admirers.

A month prior to his passing, Kathy hinted at Balltze’s deteriorating health. In a July post, she revealed the likelihood of him having cancer, sharing her own struggles in coming to terms with the diagnosis.

For meme aficionados, Balltze was more than just another meme subject. Many remember him for his fictional love of “cheemsburgers” and others for the hilarious images where he wielded a baseball bat, ready to “bonk” someone. His popularity soared to such extents that he even had his dedicated merchandise platform, where fans could purchase various products adorned with his iconic face, ranging from enamel pins to sweatshirts and tote bags. Furthermore, his likeness paved the way for him to become the mascot of a cryptocurrency token, solidifying his status as a digital age icon.
