At 29, Chinese plus-size model Gong Zhen has become a prominent figure in the fashion industry, inspiring others to embrace their individuality and beauty. Standing 170 cm tall and weighing 80 kg, Gong has modeled for over 700 advertisements targeting plus-size women since 2020, showcasing the growing representation of diverse body types in fashion.
Before her modeling career took off, Gong’s life followed a different path. Coming from a wealthy family in Shandong province, she ran a small restaurant that eventually closed due to low profit margins. In 2020, an unexpected opportunity arose when a shop owner noticed her photos on social media and invited her to work as a model in Guangzhou, southern Guangdong province. Though unsure about her future, Gong decided to take a chance.
Initially, stepping in front of the camera made Gong feel uneasy, but her determination to succeed led her to research professional modeling techniques and practice tirelessly. Her hard work paid off, and she quickly became one of China’s top-paid plus-size models, earning around 3,000 yuan (US$420) per day. Despite the challenges of long shoots, often lasting up to 9 hours, and changing into dozens of outfits each day, Gong found fulfillment in her work.
Gong’s journey wasn’t always easy. She faced bullying in her school years due to her weight, which left her feeling insecure and introverted. However, the support of her parents helped her embrace her true self. Over time, she gained confidence, learned makeup skills, and formed meaningful friendships, further shaping her positive outlook.
