The 2024 Emmy Awards witnessed historic wins as the Japan-set epic Shogun dominated the night, claiming 18 awards, including Best Drama Series. The FX series, set in feudal Japan, also saw Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai become the first Japanese actors to win Emmys for Best Actor and Best Actress in a drama, respectively. In his acceptance speech, Sanada expressed gratitude, saying, “Shogun taught me that when we work together, we can make miracles.”
Shogun’s unprecedented win of 18 awards broke the previous record for most Emmys won by a single season, previously held at 13. As the first non-English language series to win Best Drama, Shogun set a new milestone for international productions.
Meanwhile, Hacks claimed its first Best Comedy Series award, outshining the popular The Bear. The latter still secured significant wins, including Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress in a comedy, along with Best Comedy Series Directing.
Netflix’s Baby Reindeer also had a strong showing, winning three awards, including Best Limited Series. Creator and star Richard Gadd took home Best Actor and Best Writing for a limited series, while Jessica Gunning won Best Actress. Gadd encouraged TV creators to take risks and push boundaries, stating, “Good storytelling speaks to our times.”
Jeremy Allen White, the star of The Bear, won his second consecutive Best Actor in a Comedy Emmy for his portrayal of Chef Carmy. Co-star Ebon Moss-Bachrach also repeated his win as Best Supporting Actor. Liza Colón-Zayas scored a surprise victory in the Best Supporting Actress category, making her the first Latina to win in that category.
Other notable wins included Jean Smart, who won her third Emmy for Hacks, and Jodie Foster, who claimed her first Emmy for Best Actress in a Limited Series for True Detective: Night Country.
The ceremony, hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy, poked fun at the changing landscape of TV, acknowledging the shift toward streaming platforms.
