Thailand’s latest internet sensation, baby hippo Moo Deng, is causing a stir at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province, just two hours south of Bangkok. This charming little hippo, whose name translates to “bouncing pig” in Thai, has captivated millions of fans on social media with her clumsy and adorable antics. From playfully attempting to nibble on her handlers despite her lack of teeth to exploring her surroundings with boundless curiosity, Moo Deng has become a viral hit.
Moo Deng’s rise to fame has led to a huge increase in the zoo’s visitor numbers. Typically, the zoo would see around 800 visitors per day during the week, especially in the rainy season, which is traditionally the low season for tourism. However, thanks to Moo Deng’s popularity, the zoo now welcomes between 3,000 and 4,000 visitors on weekdays. Over the weekend, the number soared to 20,000, with most guests eager for a glimpse of the baby hippo.
Narungwit Chodchoy, the zoo’s director, has acknowledged the challenge of managing the influx of visitors. “Moo Deng fever means we will have to organize better so all visitors can see her,” he said, indicating that the zoo will need to adapt to accommodate the swelling crowds.
On Monday, the pink-cheeked hippo was seen happily enjoying a large bowl of vegetables and snacks, charming visitors with her playful personality. One visitor, 45-year-old Ekaphak Mahasawad, shared his excitement about seeing Moo Deng in person. “I left home in Bangkok at 6:30 this morning just to come and see Moo Deng. I’m only here to see her,” he said, highlighting the lengths people are willing to go to witness the viral star in action.
The popularity of Moo Deng has not only brought attention to her but also to her family lineage. Her grandmother, Malee, recently celebrated her 59th birthday, making her Thailand’s oldest hippo. With such a famous family, Moo Deng’s future seems as bright as her viral present.
As more and more people travel to Chonburi to catch a glimpse of this playful baby hippo, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo is enjoying a surge in attention, cementing Moo Deng as one of Thailand’s most beloved animal celebrities. With her clumsy charm and growing fan base, Moo Deng is quickly becoming a symbol of joy for animal lovers across the country.
