Japan celebrated as the historical drama Shogun made Emmy history by winning 18 awards, the most for a single drama season, including Best Drama and acting awards for leads Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. Another Japanese period piece, Blue Eye Samurai, also claimed the Best Animated Programme award, showcasing the growing international appeal of Japanese history and culture.
Shogun, a sweeping epic set in Imperial Japan, was praised for its authentic portrayal of the Warring States period, with 70% of its dialogue in Japanese. Sanada, who portrayed warlord Yoshii Toranaga, not only acted in the show but was also involved in production, which helped bring a realistic perspective to the story. The Japanese government applauded the achievement, with Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroshi Moriya emphasizing Japan’s desire to support local creators in expanding their reach into overseas markets. He noted that the government has established a committee dedicated to promoting Japan’s entertainment and content industries.
The success of Shogun comes at a time when Japanese culture is gaining significant attention worldwide. Earlier this year, the Japanese monster film Godzilla Minus One won an Oscar for visual effects, and HBO’s Tokyo Vice concluded its second season, further highlighting Japan’s rising cultural influence. On the sports front, Shohei Ohtani’s stellar performance in Major League Baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Japan’s impressive third-place finish in the Paris Olympics have added to the country’s prominence.
In addition to the entertainment industry, Japan is also experiencing a surge in tourism. Foreign visitors are flocking to experience traditional Japanese culture, including samurai sword classes and Edo-period customs. Naomi Mano, president of Tokyo-based travel agency Luxurique, explained that tourists are fascinated by Japan’s secluded history and traditions, which Shogun has helped bring to life for a global audience. Dutch tourist Dominique le Noble, inspired by the show, took a samurai sword class during her first trip to Japan, expressing her admiration for how Shogun portrays both the beauty and violence of the samurai tradition.
As news of Shogun’s Emmy wins spread, it became a trending topic online, with fans praising Sanada’s performance and his dedication to representing Japan on the world stage. Social media users shared clips of his emotional acceptance speech, celebrating the show’s success as a victory for Japanese culture.
