Kathryn Hahn fully embraced her role as the witch Agatha Harkness in the upcoming Marvel series Agatha All Along by collaborating with a real-life witch. Meeting weekly, Hahn’s mentor sought to strip away typical witch tropes and focus on the aspects of community and nature, helping Hahn dive deeper into her character. The show is a spin-off of the critically acclaimed WandaVision and continues the story of Harkness, picking up after the events of the series.
In Agatha All Along, Agatha Harkness is still trapped in the town of Westview, New Jersey, but manages to escape with the help of a mysterious goth teenager known as “Teen.” The two embark on a journey to regain Agatha’s powers by facing the trials of the legendary “Witches’ Road.” Along the way, they recruit other witches to form a coven, uniting different supernatural powers from various mythologies.
Director Jac Schaeffer, who also created WandaVision, ensured that the series would focus on women in power. She gathered a team of writers who were tasked with researching different aspects of witchcraft and magical traditions. Each writer brought unique perspectives, with interests ranging from tarot and herbology to other “witchy” elements. Schaeffer emphasized the importance of exploring the diverse supernatural gifts witches across mythology possess.
The series’ cast is also packed with talent. Hahn reprises her role as Agatha Harkness, joined by Debra Jo Rupp as Mrs. Hart, Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Patti LuPone, Sasheer Zamata, and Ali Ahn. LuPone plays Lilia Calderu, a witch whose power is rooted in the earth. Reflecting on her role, LuPone saw it as destiny, having previously portrayed witches in Penny Dreadful and practiced tarot in American Horror Story.
The series features a strong female presence both on and off the screen, with women directing, writing, and starring in key roles. The coven in Agatha All Along is a testament to the diverse ways women embody power, showcasing flawed yet complex characters.
