Embracing Ageing: A Positive Mindset for a Healthier and Happier Life

LifestyleHealthEmbracing Ageing: A Positive Mindset for a Healthier and Happier Life

Beth Narain, who turns 78 in October, lives life to the fullest—teaching Pilates, dancing to her favorite music, and spending time with friends. Narain, a former ballet dancer and Hong Kong resident since 1966, embodies a positive attitude toward ageing. “I may have a few lines on my face, but I don’t feel old,” she says. Narain takes care of herself with quality sleep, regular exercise, and a healthy diet. She also enjoys socializing with younger people, which keeps her perspective fresh and her outlook youthful.

Like Narain, others are embracing ageing with optimism. Model Paulina Porizkova, at 59, recently shared how she views this stage of life as “tremendous,” encouraging others to embrace the present rather than try to turn back the clock. Similarly, entrepreneur Martha Stewart, at 81, graced the cover of Sports Illustrated, emphasizing that living well is the key to staying vibrant.

Studies support the idea that a positive attitude toward ageing can benefit your health. Research published in 2023 found that people who felt more satisfied with ageing had a 43% lower risk of death over four years, along with reduced risk for chronic illnesses like diabetes and heart disease. A study by Bar-Ilan University in Israel also revealed that patients who felt younger during rehabilitation from medical conditions recovered better and were more optimistic about their chances.

Mindfulness plays a key role in shaping how we experience ageing, according to Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer. By paying attention to new things and staying engaged, people can remain mentally sharp and physically healthier. Langer warns against the dangers of mindlessness, where societal assumptions about ageing can lead people to neglect their well-being. Instead, she encourages individuals to see the changes that come with age as signs of growth rather than decline.

For Narain, keeping a lighthearted approach to life is essential. She advises finding joy, laughter, and even humor in everyday situations, especially as we grow older. By smiling more and worrying less, she believes, ageing can be a positive and enriching experience.
