Pesto, an enormous king penguin chick at Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium, is quickly becoming a global sensation. This nine-month-old penguin has drawn crowds from all over, with even pop star Katy Perry declaring her admiration for him during her visit to Melbourne for the Australian Football League Grand Final. Perry expressed her desire to “kiss Pesto,” a testament to the charm of this fluffy, chocolate-brown bird.
Pesto weighs a whopping 23.5 kg (52 lb), more than twice the combined weight of his parents, Tango and Hudson, making him the largest chick the aquarium has ever seen. His size and fluffy appearance have endeared him to many, with his caretakers and fans alike marveling at his rapid growth. According to Michaela Smale, one of the keepers who has cared for him since hatching, Pesto’s popularity has spread far beyond the aquarium, with many of his TikTok videos receiving millions of likes.
Much of Pesto’s bulk comes from his thick layer of brown fuzz, which helps keep him warm during the winter. As he grows older, he will eventually shed this fluff and develop the sleek adult feathers characteristic of king penguins, leading to a natural reduction in his weight.
One interesting fact about king penguins, including Pesto, is that they are non-sexually dimorphic, meaning there are no obvious external traits to distinguish males from females. After much anticipation, Sea Life Melbourne recently held a gender reveal event for Pesto, discovering he is, in fact, a male—news that was met with excitement, especially since recent king penguin hatchlings at the aquarium had all been female.
Pesto’s parents, Tango and Hudson, along with the dedicated team of aquarium keepers, continue to care for him. As part of his daily routine, Pesto is fed 25 fish to help sustain his impressive size. King penguin chicks typically remain under the care of their parents for more than a year, and Pesto’s keepers are committed to ensuring he thrives throughout this period.
Pesto’s charm and enormous size have garnered him a global fan base, solidifying his status as a true star of Sea Life Melbourne. As he continues to grow and develop, visitors from around the world will be eagerly watching his journey from fluffy chick to majestic adult penguin.
