Gangnam B-Side is the latest crime drama to explore the gritty underside of Seoul’s affluent Gangnam district. Premiering its first three episodes at the Busan International Film Festival, the stylish thriller stars Ji Chang-wook as Yoon Gil-ho, a violent yet protective pimp, and Jo Woo-jin as Kang Dong-woo, a grizzled detective who returns to Gangnam after years away. The series is directed by Park Noo-ri, marking her K-drama debut after the success of her feature film Money.
Set in the glamorous yet corrupt world of Gangnam, the series opens with Dong-woo storming a secret drug rave, uncovering a web of corruption within the police force. Fast-forward three years, and Dong-woo, transferred out of Gangnam for getting too close to its crime lords, is reluctantly drawn back when two young escorts, including his daughter’s friend Jae-hee, disappear. Jae-hee’s protector, Gil-ho, becomes embroiled in a dangerous game as he seeks vengeance against drug dealers and those hunting her.
The story weaves between Dong-woo’s quest to root out police corruption and Gil-ho’s violent attempts to protect his girls. Their paths converge as they try to uncover the truth behind the disappearances and a shadowy organization controlling Gangnam’s underworld. The show’s depiction of Gangnam is far from the glitzy shopping streets and high-end restaurants it’s known for, instead showing a neon-drenched world of secret drug dens and exploitation.
Gangnam B-Side also offers a critique of South Korea’s treatment of certain vices, with a clear distinction made between the portrayal of prostitution and drug use. While prostitution is portrayed with some level of tolerance through Gil-ho’s character, the show leaves no room for sympathy when it comes to narcotics, echoing the country’s societal views.
Park Noo-ri’s direction gives the series a fast-paced, gritty energy, blending vibrant visuals with dark, suspenseful undertones. Ji Chang-wook’s intense performance as Gil-ho and Jo Woo-jin’s portrayal of the determined detective add depth to this crime thriller, which mixes thrilling action with a look at the societal issues simmering beneath Gangnam’s surface.
Gangnam B-Side is a worthy addition to the Korean crime drama genre, offering viewers a thrilling narrative that highlights corruption, loyalty, and the lengths people will go to for survival.
